WENDY AND TOM DINE OUT

The Outback chain appears to be well received by the public. The restaurants we have been to are always crowded and we usually have to wait for a table. Diners seem to be amused by the square, plastic pager presented them at the door. When their table is ready the red lights on this object blink. This Outback looked like all the rest with its dimly lit rooms and vaguely publike atmosphere. There is some seating at the bar and at the tables surrounding it. Full meals can be ordered from both of these locations. The menu is full of cute Australian names like, "Bonzer Salads, Grilled on the Barbie, Land Rovers, Down Under Favorites", etc.

RESTAURANT:

OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE

45 Mazzeo Drive, Randolph, MA

DATE:

April 23, 2000

MEAL:

Dinner

BREAD:

Two very nice, hot, loaves of dark bread served on a cutting board with whipped butter on the side

SALAD:

Garden Salad with blue cheese dressing - Very attractive presentation with brightly colored vegetables but the blue cheese dressing had large salty hunks of cheese. Looked pretty, but didn't taste as lovely as it looked because of the dressing. A very generous portion that would probably be excellent with another dressing.

Caesar Salad was very good and was served in a very large bowl.

APPETIZER:

ENTREE:

Special Sirloin ($12.95) - Although the meat was cooked as ordered, the outer coating had too much pepper. The meat itself was quite tender. The Jacket Potato was "loaded" and the inside was quite good. Unfortunately, the restaurant puts butter on the outside of the potato and then puts a coarse salt on top of that. The salty taste permeated the potato and made the skin inedible.

Ribs on the Barbie - The ribs were cooked appropriately but the sauce was not to our liking and there was too much of it slathered on the ribs. A generous portion. Served with cooked apples with a sugary, caramelized, sticky sauce on them. Mixed, steamed vegetables were average.
