Let me start off by saying that this is how all
business should be handled. Mr Sugal is one of a kind. You would have to be
crazy not to order his products.
I have been playing now for a number of years
and my first purchase from Mr Sugal was a KW I for my Tenor and Alto
sax. Wonderful projection, and not to mention beautiful looking pieces.

My next purchase was a black and gold sopranino. Loved
it before I even played the horn. I
must say that before I purchased any of his products, I was a little
skeptical. But now that I know the quality of his work, it has prompted me
to buy one of his latest horn.
The copper and gold alto sax. Wow! This horn came a
day earlier than expected and just looking at the case before I opened it, I
was already pleased! The horn itself is lovely, a spectacular piece of
craftsmanship to behold. The
horn was wonderfully pack and secured with cork bit. No damage to the horn
what so ever.
I proceeded to piece the horn together and what do you know!
That horn is the spitting image of my Yanagisawa 991. This Sugal brand horn
has made me put aside my Yanagisawa to enjoy the rich tone and fluid key
work.
The upper and lower register plays effortlessly and
the color of the horn is just eye catching. Thank you Mr. Sugal for the
awesome work. I will be back - Jonathan

Hi
Gary,
Well, I’ve been gigging
and working that GS Copper Alto I got for an embarrassing price on the
“Snooze You Loose” promotion. Being extremely pleased with previous
purchases of your Bari Sax and Flute, I couldn’t resist. This time your
Copper sax went up against my Selmer Mark IV (SN# 76538) That I’ve played
the last 28 years.
First impression out of
the box: I was impressed with the solid expensive feel of the copper sax.
It IS gorgeous – but that was no surprise, because your Bari and Flute were
masterpieces as well. Using the stock(?) mouthpiece you bundled, I played
the horn. A clear, centered full tone came out with VERY little effort or
resistance. The altisomo was particularly easy!
Since then I’ve gigged
with approving nods from my fellow musicians. They like the look and
sound! The horn is sweet, in tune from top to bottom, and plays like a
dream with superb sound out of the box. I have a GS I copper mouthpiece as
well. I am VERY impressed with your pro kit with the sax and especially the
mouthpiece you bundled with your sax. In fact, I’d like to get another
one! May we make arrangements?
I compared it to the Mark
VI. With the same mouthpiece and reed, the Mark VI played more resistance,
keyboard very similar with a variation on the Mid-register F# and bis key.
These variations didn’t prevent me from switching back and forth with ease.
The Altisimo comes EASIER on the sugal copper. The copper Sugal has a tone
VERY compatible to the Mark VI. I think it cuts slightly more. I will be
using the SUGAL often in preference to my Selmer Mark VI when LOOKS count, I
want the tone to cut through more, where altisomo is in demand, and when I
need to whisper or play quieter as in acoustic combo work, or pitt
orchestral work.
THANKS AGAIN for a
beautifully crafted instrument at a price I couldn’t refuse!

Junkie! - Roy

The
endorsement (as if I were a star) follows. It’s a little wordy, so feel free
to cut and edit as necessary. It’s also attached as a word document.
Back in 1996 I was on a quest to find a mouthpiece
for my Balanced Action alto that would do what I wanted. With the incredible
number of pieces available, I was going nuts play testing them. I’d tried
dozens!
Then I spotted your ad in The Saxophone Journal and
gave you a call. I was immediately impressed by your willingness to spend
time on the phone determining what I was looking for. You found out what my
horn was and what I’d been playing on it, what I’d tried and what I found
lacking in those, and you asked a few other questions. You also explained
your policy was no refund, but that you’d work with me virtually forever
until I was satisfied. When it arrived, the first thing I noticed was the
obvious quality of workmanship. As a former machinist, I have an eye for
those fine details that truly finish a piece of work; no easy job with
copper. I put it on the horn and it took exactly one note, less than a
second, and I knew that there was no way I was sending it back; not even if
you offered me twice the price I paid!
The low register just rolled out of the horn, the
altissimo screamed, and everything in between was easier to play in tune.
Sure, intonation is the player’s job, but my Super Gonz did (and still does)
an impeccable job of transmitting my intentions to the instrument. You just
can’t ask for more than that. Since then, I’ve mostly been playing lead in
big bands in the area and the tone quality is crystal clear and never
shrill. Without over-blowing, which we tend to do when trying to survive in
front of all those brass players, I can be heard above the section. This not
only means that I can actually lead, but that subtle dynamics are possible.
At the same time, I can get a very contemporary sound when called for in a
small group setting.
When I got my Series IV Copper Soprano home
yesterday, the first thing I noticed was that it is visually a beautiful
instrument. When I got it set up it and played it, again it took less than a
second for me to know I had a treasure in my hands. This is absolutely the
finest soprano I’ve ever played! A magnificent tone that, like my Sugal alto
piece, allows for musical interpretation; not merely getting the notes out.
I was able to play so soft it was nearly inaudible.
My wife is a singer and has stood in front of big
bands needing earplugs in order to do her job. When she heard that note, her
eyes got wide. Impressed is not the word! Incredulous would be better. As a
vocalist, she just didn’t think that it was possible for any instrument to
do that. I dug through my soprano charts and played through "Groove
Merchant" the Jerome Richardson chart done by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Band.
When I came to something I had previously considered extremely difficult, if
not impossible, the low C# to Bb, the Bb just jumped out of the horn. I
immediately wanted to go back and replay the gig.
Once again, your willingness to utilize copper, a
difficult material, and your attention to detail has given me more of an
opportunity to experience the art in music. It doesn’t get any better than
that. Thanks again.

Hi, I think I can speak on Sugal products with some actual
experience. I have 4 of his mouthpieces and 2 of his horns. I
think his mouthpieces are some of the most high quality pieces
on the market. Bright or Dark is a matter of taste as far as
sound. He has models that cover both ends. As for the Saxes, I
have an antique tenor and alto. These are the Series IV
models. Gary's horns are great buy for the money. THEY ARE NOT
STUDENT HORNS. They are pro quality horns. They are not Mark
VI's but they are definitely not Taiwanese junk. If I was
purchasing a NEW (thats an important word) sax and wanted pro
quality, but wanted to spend around 1500.00, I would consider
buying. Its usually double that for something new of similiar
quality.

Rob, I just got the Copper alto and tenor. I will be buying
the soprano and Baritone soon. Both horns are great. Great
feel and great sound. The drawback is that you have to use
quality mouthpieces on these horns. his mouthpieces are also
the best that I have played ever. Hiis products are definately
quality made products. If you are looking for inexpensive
horns that are quality built then these are the horns to get.
Selmers and Keilworths are definately great horns if Money is
no object. |

Gary,
(Sept 30, 2006)
I stopped by the music store today and bought a mouthpiece for my Gary Sugal
Tenor Series IV today. I didn't have a tenor mouthpiece because I am an alto
player.
When I played your horn, I
didn't stop until my bottom lip started to bleed. This thing is incredible.
I bought this horn because I am a military man (therefore, not rich) and
expected to get a student type horn due to the price.
I apologize
unreservedly for even thinking that. The intonation is unheard of for a sax
of this price. I wish I could scream to the whole music world what you have
here. I am going to let everyone hear and play this horn.
Gary, I can't thank you
enough for this incredible deal. I beg you, don't stop making these horns. I
feel sorry for the companies that charge twice as much as you do, because
they are going to feel the sting as soon as your horns gain popularity.
Again, thank you for making a professional horn and selling it for a student
horn price!! God bless you!!! Lincoln C
Hey Gary,
I'm
finally getting around to dropping you a line about the great setup I got
from you earlier this year.
The Black & Silver Series IV Tenor with
the Silver Neck is one sweet horn. It looks good, it feels good and it
sounds fantastic with the KWII mouthpiece
.I don't know how you can offer a horn
like this for that price but I'm glad you can. I like the fat focused
sound and the fact that it plays in tune with great intonation and smooth
action with a solid feel. And let's not forget edge on demand.
The KWII is a very comfortable
mouthpiece you can relax and play. It gives your tone more presence and
color. When I first played it at rehersal the cats in the band noticed a
difference and complimented me on the tone.
To this day they still don't know I
changed mouthpiece but they know something is different. My other piece is
a Jody Jazz DV - however, the KWII gives me the sound I have been looking
for. The KWII even brought new life to my Conn 10M now that baby is
singing too.
Thanks Gary, Al in MD
Thanks Gary!
I’ve
had a chance to try out my new Sugal Flute and compare it to my handmade
~$7200 Haynes flute I use for weddings and
classical work. I needed a backup in case my Haynes was lost,
stolen, broken, or in repair
while I had flute work to do. I am
paid well to
provide quality flute music at weddings and can ill afford a “No Show” for
this solo work. The quality of the S/S baritone sax I bought a
year and a half ago made your flute a no brainer choice and I am pleased
to report that It will fulfill this backup function nicely.
The Sugal flute sound is sweet and full
from top to bottom. A noticeable difference in volume and fullness
occurred once I took the plugs out of the keys and made the flute open
hole. WOW! – big difference. One should really try to play with the open
holes – the sound is that much fuller. Sitting next to the Haynes, the
Sugal has a very similar look – the silver on both simply sparkles.
I pulled out some of my chestnuts and
compared the Haynes and Sugal flutes: With very minor adjustments in
technique the Sugal played through the pieces and compared favorably. My
wife had to listen carefully to tell the difference between the two! My
Haynes probably is about 20% “better” for 25X the price!
Here’s another little tidbit – I put
the Haynes head joint on the Sugal. This made the Sugal flute almost
indistinguishable from the Haynes. I couldn’t put the Sugal head joint on
the Haynes because my Haynes has a slightly smaller bore than the Sugal.
Thanks again for making high quality
affordable!
-Roy

Gary, Many thanks for
this wonderful soprano sax, I
want you to know I really appreciate it.
Hi
Gary,
I recently purchased one of your
series IV pure copper soprano saxophones that you picked out for me and I’m
delighted with the horn and the transaction.
The sound is just spectacular and
I’d like to take that to the next level by purchasing a professional soprano
saxophone mouthpiece from you. I’m currently playing the composite one that
came with the horn.
Its obvious that you make the
world’s best mouthpieces (I read multiple reviews and people say they’re
second to none – pretty much the best) so I’d like to know which mouthpiece
you would recommend for me for playing jazz/classical type music.
I’m looking for a rich,
projective, and round but fully open tone that would be perfect for concert
solos. Which mouthpiece model would you recommend?
I’d also like to know what reeds you recommend for
your specific mouthpieces (for concert / classical playing)?
Thank you very much, it was certainly a pleasure
doing business –
I’m totally satisfied with thesaxophone!

Hi
Gary, Roger from Florida. (12/!5/05)
I just wanted to take the time
to thank you once again for such great products.
Both the Copper Tenor
and Alto are awesome, even though I'm a bit under the weather, so I
didn't push it too hard. The feel on both
horns and the action is better than I expected. I didn't want to put either
of them down.
My next step is to get your
mouthpieces. I'll have to call you again so we can discuss what I'm looking
to get as far as sound.
I will definitely promote
these horns just like I did with the soprano I got from you 2 years ago.
Thanks again and look forward to speaking with you again soon. Roger
Gary, 10/2005
I received
the copper alto you sent me yesterday.
It's awesome. I love the tone i get on it.
I love the way the keys are layed out, too. I
dont think I'll be sending it back for the antique horn like I thought
before.
I would like to get a Super Classic II
mouthpiece (cut out of copper) sometime soon. I've heard they are really
good. I'm also thinking about getting a tenor from you sometime in the
very near future
Thanks so much, Annalis

How
I arrived at choosing a Gary
Sugal
Sax...
I initially saw
Sugal
saxophones
for sale on EBay and began to do my research...
First, I knew that you sold
“high” end custom mouthpieces and were well established in that field. I
also noticed your
Saxophones
for sale on EBay and later I checked out your site directly. The price
seemed to be right, but what about the quality, after all, I would be buying
this sight unseen...
I began searching the various
Sax Forums with the following results. I found two schools of thought on the
Gary Sugal
Saxophones.
The first group had many voices that
were quick to condemn your horn as a slickly promoted overseas market horn
that was no better then any of the “School” approved imports you see heavily
marketed on EBay.
However, none of these critics had
ever played your instrument! The second group consisted of those who had
actually bought one of your horns.
In every case, they were happy
with their purchase. They felt they had received a good deal for the
money they’d invested. Some swore by the horn as the best they’d ever
played, while some still preferred their Selmer or Keilworth or... But all
who had actually purchased your horn were pleased with their new Sax.
Everything seemed to point to the
fact that the $1,500 you were asking for your Tenor was a great value.
Finally there were two other facts
that helped to influence me to buy my horn for you. Number one, I don’t
think you’re going to want to hurt your reputation for quality
mouthpieces by selling a sub-par horn. Number two was the fact that you
are a successful player who will personally test and pick out the horn
you send out.
My final analysis would be...
This is a great value for the money. With only a $1,600 price tag this
may be the BEST deal out there.
I don’t make the claim that a
Sugal
horn outplays everything else. That would be ridiculous, plus I don’t
have the experience playing other brands to make that comparison.
Besides, you really aren’t trying to compete with a Selmer
Series 54’.
I believe your market is
a low cost professional level horn. In that respect the
Sugal
Sax clearly meets the goal.
It is definitely a plus that
you field test your horns before you send them out. Buying a Sax from
a well respected player helps when buying “sight unseen”.
The final question is this: is
the horn worth the money? In my opinion, it definitely is a good deal.
The sax is a solid professional level horn that plays great.
Plus , it comes with a very solid case. I couldn’t be happier! Thanks
Gary for making a great horn!
Well - If you've read all of this post I hope you realize that I'm
nothing more than a decent player that feels like he got a good
deal... I did notice that most of the negative press about Gary's
horns were from people who have never played them. I can only speak
for the (1) horn I bought, but I am very pleased .

Hi
! (Sept 05-ALTO)
My
name is Tommy Terran (Breggia). I am presently a performing musician in the
New England area. I am also an arranger and previously a music
educator and composer/arranger instructor at the Berklee College of Music in
Boston
Recently,
I was
introduced to Gary Sugal Signature Series Custom Made Saxophone Mouthpieces
and Saxophones. After a short series of conversations with Gary, he asked me
if I would try out one of his new "Copper Saxophones -Series III"
In the
past of course I have played alto and tenor saxophone in both big band and
small group musical settings, To be perfectly honest with you I was amazed
at the total "qualitative resonance" and relative intonation in the entire
range of the horn -from the lowest note to the highest. I was equally
impressed with the different types of resonance projection I could obtain by
changing different mouthpieces... In my case, I have used a Beechler #6 for
many years which satisfied my overall need till now.
Another very pleasant surprise of the horn I tested (alto) was the" Ease of
Fingering" which closely approximates that of highly priced "S" saxophones.
In
closing, I have found playing one of the new "Copper Series III" saxophones
to be a most exhilarating musical experience, and I highly recommend and
endorse this series as a professional instrument. I sincerely hope
anyone reading this testimonial will seriously consider purchasing this
great horn.
I am
also of course now very seriously considering investing in one of Gary
Sugal's custom made (copper) Super Classic Alto mouthpieces to compliment
the copper alto I recently decided purchase.!
Cordially, Tommy Terran.......

Hi, Gary:
I received the horn this morning and tested it out
with a vintage Meyer mouthpiece.
Its Incredible!!!!.
Gary,
How can you make this Prof. horns at this
prices?. Many thanks about engraving my name and all the extras!.
Your sop. copper sax. is going to be enjoyed and
treated like a baby.
Of course, you have your positive feedback yet.
Very best regards from Sevilla (Spain).

I received the Series
IV last night for my 40th birthday. I opened it with my two kids and
wife watching. We were all impressed with the overall look of the case
and horn.
I was really impressed
with the feel. I have been playing sax for 30 years and have owned lots of
saxes in my life including a Selmer Mark VI.
The moment I picked up
the Series IV I could tell it was a quality pro horn.
I loved the way the
lower register played at low volumes and the extended range of the F# and G
keys. Usually looks of a horn are not a big priority for me. In
this case it’s a bonus that it looks so amazing. I can not imagine a better
40th birthday present.

Just
had to let you know I received the Sterling Silver w/ Gold Keys, Tenor Series IV
this evening, and in a word, FANTASTIC!
I’m so happy with the instrument after
only seeing and playing it an hour, I’m ready to make a deal on an Alto
ASAP.
Thank you for all of your feedback and
information provided during this purchase. To me that’s what makes a long
distance purchase either just ok or great, this was Great. And I
especially want to thank you for making this the easiest and best internet
deal I have ever done. Not only did it come earlier then I expected it
is exactly what you said it would be, and maybe more.
For anyone out there like me, nervous
about making a saxophone purchase over the internet, I’m here to tell you
“buy it from Gary, you won’t be disappointed”. It’s been a long time
since I played a pro. horn; I forgot that feeling of excellence, tone and
smooth action of a quality pro horn. Once again, thank you very much.

Gary,
(May 2005-Sterling Silver Body & S/S KEYS)
Wanted to drop a line about the new
Sterling Silver Series IV Tenor Sax I received Friday morning. As a
reminder of my profile...I’m a 42 year old sax player who hadn’t touched a
horn in about 12 years.
In
my college days as a music major, I owned a Mark VI Alto and a Selmer Series
III Tenor. About six months ago I purchased on EBay a 30 year old Conn
16M for about $350. That horn helped me to realize how much I missed
playing, and although the horn played well enough for a beginning band
student or as a great “Marching” band instrument; the horn wasn’t what I was
looking for to play in my church for solo and ensemble work.
Within a short
time I began to search the internet for a new horn... The truth being
told, if I’d had the finances, I would have spent $4,500 on a new Selmer,
Keilworth, etc... However I have three kids in a private Christian
school so my budget would only allow for about $1,500 dollars for a new
horn. With that type of budget my choices were definitely narrowed...
I could use EBay and try to find another decent used horn or perhaps even a
new student model Yamaha.
Now as to how I arrived at choosing a
Gary Sugal Sax... I initially saw your saxophones for sale on EBay and began
to do my research... First, I knew that you sold “high” end custom
mouthpieces and were well established in that field. I also noticed
your Saxophones for sale on EBay and later I checked out your site directly.
The price seemed to be right, but what
about the quality, after all, I would be buying this sight unseen... I

their purchase. They felt they had received a good deal for the money
they’d invested.
Some swore by the horn as the best they’d
ever played, while some still preferred their Selmer or Keilworth or...
But all who had actually purchased your horn were pleased with their new
Sax.
Everything seemed to point to the fact that the $1,500 you were asking for
your Tenor was a great value. Finally there were two other facts that
helped to influence me to buy my horn for you. Number one, I don’t
think you’re going to want to hurt your reputation for quality mouthpieces
by selling a sub-par horn. Number two was the fact that you are a
successful player who will personally test and pick out the horn you
send out.
Again, I’ve only owned three other tenors
in my life. A Bundy tenor that I played from sixth through tenth
grade, a Selmer series III tenor (and Mark VI Alto) that I played from tenth
grade through college, then no saxophones for about 12 years, next a 30 year
old Conn 16M (since November) and finally my new Gary Sugal Tenor. So
this review is NOT by an active professional player with years of different
brand experience, but a decent player who has rekindled his love for the
Sax.
Now to the review of my new Sterling
Silver Gary Sugal Series IV Tenor..
First impression is the case. This
is an excellent quality case with recessed pockets for the mouthpiece and
neck and a spare compartment large enough to hold my sax stand! Great
choice for a case. Perhaps as a selling point you could offer your
customers a choice of a hard case or gig bag? Next up comes the
shipping packaging. Well done with Styrofoam corners that held the
case firmly in the shipping box. The sax had been rewrapped very
carefully with all the usual protective corks still firmly in place.
Using my Yamaha mouthpiece, I found the
tenor to be a great horn and well worth my money (with shipping and all just
under $1,600). The lower register plays well even at softer volume
levels. Middle and upper registers also play well. The high “G”
key works as advertised! The general intonation is good. I
tested this aspect with my Chromatic Tuner and found that the horn plays
close to proper pitch throughout the breadth of the scale. With my
Yamaha MPC the projection is excellent and this will make a great solo horn.
I didn’t find any “hot” notes that blew loud. The Sterling Silver
plate is beautiful and very clean, with no bare spots anywhere on the horn.
Thanks for including a polishing cloth. The springs are solid and the
horn has a good feel to it.
I currently am using a Yamaha 4C
mouthpiece, so a mouthpiece upgrade will definitely be in my immediate
future. The included neck strap is fine, but it wouldn’t hurt to
discreetly find out the size of your clients. With my size 18” neck
I’m more comfortable with a bigger neck strap.
My final analysis would be... This
is a
great value for the money. With only a $1,485 price tag this may
be the BEST deal out there. I don’t make the claim that a Sugal horn
outplays everything else. That would be ridiculous, plus I don’t have
the experience playing other brands to make that comparison.
Besides, you really aren’t trying to
compete with a Selmer Series 54’. I believe your market is a low cost

send them out. Buying a Sax from a well respected player helps when
buying “sight unseen”. The final question is this: is the horn worth
the money? In my opinion, it definitely is a good deal. The sax
is a solid professional level horn that plays great. Plus , it comes
with a very solid case. I couldn’t be happier! Thanks Gary for
making a great horn
Sincerely,

Happy
New Year Gary,
I have just done my first gig with your new Antique sax, every bit as good
as my old 1964 mk6 tenor and great projection, with a great tone
I will give you a full report on it when I get back from Spain at the end of
the month. I think you have taken up where the Selmer mk6 left off and gone
the extra mile, see you soon, thanks from Harry the Sax

Hey
Mr. Sugal,
The tenor sax is great. My friends envy me and
the ladies think the sax is cute.
It has everything a sax player of any calibour
would want and ever need.
Whenever the time comes, I will come back and
buy another saxophone from you. It was a pleasure doing business and I
appreciate all of your help and patience during the holidays. Thank you
again,

Gary
I have had the horn about 30 minutes now. Long enough to let my
pizza burn in the oven.
I noticed immediately how much more comfortable the horn was in my hands.
The roller keys on the table actually allow my finger to roll across them,
every other horn I have ever played, required I pick up the pinkie and put
it back down. The mechanisms of the keys are solid and I won't have
to reassemble the G sharp unit all the time to replace springs and glue in
cork like I did on the PinYin,
which is up for sale on eBay and going soon.
This horn is a good match for me. I like the sound, it's much fuller, this
was what I kept searching for on the Chinese horn but couldn't find....I
wasn't able to lay my hands on my Bari mpc when I unpacked her so grabbed
up the one you supplied and the curved neck and she was singing.
The curved neck really seems to have been designed well, with the Chinese
thing the curved neck was an after thought that was like a tourniquet on
the horn.
I wish you would drop a few more hints about the manufacture...does the
name begin with Y? If so it 3 or 5 syllables long?
Gary,
(Oct 2004)
I've been really busy and have
finally found some time to drop you this note.
I've been playing my Sugal black
nickel soprano since I bought it from you early this year. I absolutely
love it. It sounds and plays as good as any Yanigasawa I've tried and
playing it is pure enjoyment.
I play professionally here in
Jacksonville and have a jazz quartet that plays pretty regularly out at
the beach. They won't let me put this instrument down. I think I probably
play 50% of our program on your horn. Our crowd loves it every time I pick
up my soprano.
You have outdone yourself with this
horn. Let me know if I can help as a reference with other prospective
buyers. I really hope this takes off for you.

Gary
I
am sorry that I have not touched base with you after I received the alto
sax (silver/gold) but my life has been very busy and I kept saying --Dam!
I have got to email Gary but---well, you know how that is.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that the horn is SWEET! I must say I was
a little concerned at first for buying a horn without playing it, touching
it --you know. But, because of your reputation and the quality of
your marvelous mouthpieces and also as after we talked on the phone I felt
that this was the right thing to do.
WoW
is this horn Sassy. She has a voice and personality thats Hot. It took about
4 times of playing the horn for about 45 mins. before she really started to
breath and settle in. This horn has great feel --- very nice. The "ring" is
there! The horn is perfect.
I
live in Portage MI. which is a suburb of Kalamazoo. We have W.M.U. here and 3
other colleges---this is a college town.Anyway, my horn and you are getting
some advertising around here. I have been doing some playing around town and
I am always asked what kind of horn that I am playing.
They
even ask questions about where I got my horn from the music shop were
my horn repairman works. Bottom line I really like the horn and I would like
to know what I can get a soprano , and also a tenor for these days--I may
just have to retire my other horns--even my Selmer Mark VI.
Anyway, I know its been a few months but, I have been wanting to send you a
note for a long time.
Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Peace
my Brother

I
received the Antique tenor sax with the high G and the horn sounds really
good.
The mouth piece you sent me (SG I )
feels about right with a 8* facing. I dig the tone of the copper a lot
more than brass, as it gives everything a very warm round tone, which
doesn't rob me of playing the high end with ease, so overall it's a very
balanced set up.
The horn looks very solid and I like
the way you set the action on the high side, I use to do the same with all
my horns only even higher.
I know it's a little easier to get
a bigger sound that way, Selmer tends to set their horns up for classical
players and it's a bear trying to get a jazz tone when the holes are
covered.
Also nice touch with the metal
resonater pads, my previous horns were always repaded with platic resonaters
and they sounded like crap. I was kind of suprised that after all
these years I could still play from low Bb to high F#, but for the life of
me I couldn't get the high G to speak without slapping my rubber link
mouthpiece on. I guess I'll have to work on that.
Thanks for the setup.

7-04 Gary -
I'm finally back home tonight, with the
horn all safe and sound.
Just wanted to thank you again for
spending the time with me on picking out the horn. It couldn't have been a
better horn - so much better than any horn I've ever played. I just haven't
been able to find a name worthy of her yet.
I'm
saving her first gig for August 28th- make sure to watch your TV- the first
gig i'm using her on- I'm playing the national anthem for the Carolina
Panthers / New England Patriots game, live on national TV that night around
7:30. It should either be on ABC or FOX . Hopefully it'll be great exposure
for your horns, and hopefully I get some out of it too ha ha ha.
Expect me up there sometime next year- when I see you next, I'll be
picking up a bunch of stuff from you ha hah. Hopefully a KW II, that
gorgeous soprano, and a good soprano mouthpiece. I really dug that horn.
I'd love to help you get the Sugal name out here in the area. If you've got
brochures or something, feel free to send them. I'd love to do some big
advertising on my site for you as well, so if you have a banner or anything,
please send it my way as well. I'd love to help you out. Quality products
are what people need.
Thanks again for everything, and be sure to watch the TV for your horn!!!!
Thanks-Ryan S
Hi Gary!
Sterling Silver Baritone 6-04
It
came on Saturday! Indeed, you packed your (now mine!) Bari with meticulous
attention to detail. The instrument is stunning in
appearance.
Though it looks like a masterpiece, I'm even more impressed as how it plays.
My wife, who teaches singing, and performs herself, has heard me
try out Yamahas, Yanis, Keilworths, and mostly Selmer Mark IV's. She says
this one (the Sugal) is the most "musical" bari she's heard me play. That
says to me your Sugal has an intangible that is difficult to
capture.
This instrument does play easier than the Mark VI's I've tried, and with
more expression. I can whisper down to low A, as well as rattle the
walls with it! The setup (mouthpiece, reed, etc.),
per your recommendation, fits my need beautifully.
A word about
the keyboard. As you know I've played my Selmer Mark VI Tenor since 1962.
I am VERY used to the VI's keyboard and my worry
about Switching away from a VI to another
brand or era (Selmer series III) was of concern because of the style of
playing I'd do - switching quickly to bari from tenor - etc. for a solo.
Well, it is easy with the
Sugal!
The
variations are so small with the Sugal that
switching over is easy just
as you said.
Gary, everything you claim and counseled on
the phone or in your ads has
proved true for me, and I will no hesitate
to advise other players to
contact you. Many wishes to you for much
success!
THANKS SO MUCH!
-Roy
Gary,
I
wanted to take a few minutes to tell you how delighted I am with the Series
III silver soprano saxophone. The quality of the instrument exceeded
my expectations and I found that it was quite playable right out of the box!
Your E-bay description was accurate
and the sax arrived in very good condition.

Once I’ve gotten comfortable with
the instrument, you can be sure that I’ll be contacting you for a
mouthpiece. My old Selmer C* is fine for now; it’s going to take some
serious practice before I’ll be able to appreciate a better ‘piece.
Again, many thanks from a very
satisfied customer.
Jim

Hi Gary,
The sax arrived right on schedule. I have used it for 3 sessions now
and I must say it sounds great and is pretty easy blowing. I'll let
the newness were off and comment later. So far though, very nice and
you have a happy customer. Frank

Hello Gary,
I just want to take the time to let you know how much I appreciate the alto
you sent me. I've been laid off from my day gig for several months now and
have had to rely on playing and teaching private lessons for income which is
hard to do in this part of the country, not much work around here.
consequently I have had to sell my expensive alto and find a less expensive
sax but that I can feel comfortable playing. The Gary Sugal Series III alto
you sent easily plays better than some of the over priced pro horns on the
market, the intonation is right on and after about 5 minutes of playing the
sax I found that I wasn't missing my Selmer at all. I truly appreciate your
efforts and wish you continued success with the Gary Sugal Series III
saxophones.
Sincerely,
Hector
Dear Mr. Sugal,
It
has been a unique pleasure doing business with you. I find you to be a
passionate musician with a real understanding of the saxophone and what it
takes to make one sound beautiful but over and above that a gentleman.
The Gary Sugal Series
III Black Nickel tenor I bought from you is a joy to play. Great
intonation, fine craftsmanship, and solid mechanics are only icing on the
cake compared to the excellent sound. I have tested it against my
1920's Selmer Tru-Tone, and my 1996 Weril Senior. Far superior to either in
all respects. To me the most notable attribute is how this horn allows the
distinct sound of a mouthpiece/reed combination to pierce thru the color
that a saxophone naturally gives the vibrations produced by them. It blows
easy and the volume of the notes are consistent thru the octaves and through
the registers.
I am sure it will
help me in the style and method of playing that I am used to. That style
progresses from practice and represent feelings from the heart and soul.
Thank You !

Dear Mr. Sugal,
This
old-timer put down his saxophone many years ago, although I continue to play
the flute and clarinet. But after enjoying an evening of Coleman Hawkins,
Benny Carter, and others of that period on new (re-mastered) issues of cuts
from their “glory days,” the sax bug came back and bit me.
By chance, I hit on
your web site and was soon intrigued by both your mouthpiece designs and
your line of saxophones — real beauties at prices I could manage. You’ll
recall our conversations on the phone about both, and it wasn’t long before
I had bought two saxes (alto and tenor) and ordered Gary Sugal mouthpieces
to go with them.

Am I pleased? The
answer is a resounding YES! Well, the mouthpieces are in the process of
manufacturing, but the saxophones are getting lots of action out here in New
Mexico! The workmanship of the instruments is first-rate, the keying is
smooth and responsive, and the sound is, well, luscious. And I think the
black finish is a total knockout! Wish I had owned these instruments a long
time ago — for sure, I would never have abandoned the sax.

Dear
Gary,
I
have now had the pleasure of playing the Black Alto I purchased from you for
a couple of weeks. The horn has a nice solid feel to it, and the key
work is tight and responsive. Just like a contemporary Selmer.
The
intonation is rock solid, all the way up and down the horn, from altissimo
to lower register; and the horn generates a very complex combination of
centered, over and undertones. Before I bought this horn from you, my
main alto was a Conn "Chu Berry", that I recently had overhauled with
original style Conn reso pads. At first I thought your horn was
brighter than my "Chu", but the more I play it, the more it sounds like the
Chu, maybe even a bit darker, especially in the lower register, where it
sounds just like a tenor. It also plays easily in all registers.
Hitting
those low Cs, Bs and Bbs is a piece of cake. I can whisper them out.
Altissimos are equally easy to hit. Your horn has now become my main
alto. For the past week I've put my Mark VI tenor away and have been
practicing exclusively on the GS Series III.. That's how much I like
it!
So when
I brought the horn to rehearsal I got a lot of comments from my band.
This is my 6th saxophone (3 altos, 2 tenors and a C Mel), and the guys think
I have acquired some strange malady. They call me a "saxaholic".
So when I started tacking the horn out of it case, there were some skeptical
looks shot my way. A lot of whistling came next, when the saw the
black nickel finish, with the gold keys and engraving, but opinions were
held back. The compliments really began coming when we started
playing. They're now all saying that your horn has a better, more
pleasant and complete tone than my other altos.
I'm very
pleased with my purchase

Hi
Gary;
I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am
with my new G.S. SERIES 3 TENOR SAX. The horn is
outstanding. It arrived via Federal Express in perfect shape. The
boys in the band were in awe at the sound
and sight of this great horn. I feel pound for pound your
G.S. SERIES 3 is a better bargain vs the Yamaha. Thanks again

I
wanted to let you know how delighted I am with my new Sugal soprano
saxophone! You have engineered a beautiful playing horn. It
blows away my previous two sopranos - Selmer Mark VI and a Couf
Superba
1. I have put many hours on the new horn and have had my repair tech do some
subtle tweaking. I like a certain feel on all my horns.
Your new rubber soprano mouthpiece is excellent, but alas, I am totally into
my Leibman mouthpeice, which plays beautifully on this horn. For
my money, it is the best soprano mouthpiece ever! I've owned
and/or played most .I am wondering if you would allow me to return the
rubber mouthpiece for a credit toward the purchase of another Liebman
1, and if so, what would the additional cost be?
By the way, I too attended Berklee, and was fortunate to have
studied saxophone with Joe Viola in '69.
Thanking you again,
Steve L.
A FEW MORE!
A)
Gary, the tenor sax you sold to me is a phenomenal instrument!
the black nickel body and gold keys make for a gorgeous look. my son was
very impressed with the way it looked and most of all, how it played. The
sax, accompanied with your custom made mouthpiece, sounded great and was
extremely smooth! My son played a couple of different saxes
including a Selmer, and he says this one is the best he has ever played. I
know that at his concert last night, all his solos were never better. many
parents came up to my wife and me and commented on how well he played and
also about the beauty of the instrument! one father asked if I had payed
$5,000 for it! so, for the great price and quality, my thumbs are up
to you and your product. One last thing, john's band director was so
impressed, he wants to bring up to the board about buying some of your
instruments for the band. Thanks again for the great service, quality, and
the fact that it was a pleasure to talk and deal with you,
musically, john roesch

I've bought a Sugal soprano sax. I think it's really a very
beautiful instrument.
When it arrived to my home (in Italy) I was really
surprised because it was much better than I thought.
(I've had seen only photos so I kept crossed my
fingers :) I win the sax at an Ebay auction and also I decided
to use some other bucks to buy a wonderful leather
case from Mr.Sugal and a mouthpiece. I think I was lucky, sure I was one of
the first buyers of this instrument. The sax comes with two necks, one
curved one straight and for me it's very much better than a Maxtone or also
professional models sax like the
Yamaha or other models. I have also a King and a Boosey saxs and the Sugal
is more than ok in the comparison. Not at the level of the Selmers but it
has its feeling. It is almost black at the light
(black nickel) with golden keys and has a reinforced Keilwerth style bridge
as well as the tear drop, high F# key. At the eye it's one the most
beautiful soprano I've ever seen. The keys are fluid, it's a pleasure to
play it, the pads are great. Sound centered perfeclty in tune and it's easy
to play from top to bottom with a great fat subtone. It's a a pro instrument
at the price of a student
one. I'm really satisfied. Angelo

I think it is absolutely great! It is an
awesome sax for the $$$$ well worth a LOT more. The mouthpiece that comes
with it does not do it any favors, it's ok but.... Get a good
mouthpiece! You'll be glad you did! Makes a world of difference. I can't
wait till the sax is broke in ....that will take about six months of
playing, less if you play everyday. You will not be disappointed if you get
one of these Sugal Saxes. In fact I liked it so well I just bought a
Tenor I like the Soprano
Good luck! >JoJo

Hello,
The Sugal soprano I bought recently is a fine horn, especially for the
price. I wouldn't put it in the same category as the Yamaha custom or some
of the other high end horns, but it seems to be a well built sax, plays in
tune and has great response. I don't know if these horns vary a lot from
instrument to instrument, that would be my only concern. I would think Mr.
Sugal would send you another if you happened to get a defective sax. The
only other thing is that the sax does not come with a case, at least mine
did not. He may try and sell you one for an additional $45.00. He will also
add a percentage on top of the sale if you
pay by paypal so that he doesn't lose the transaction fee. You might want to
inquire about these two things before buying. Hope this helps.> Hector
