- .from an e-mail:
"I . . . am writing a history of William Lincoln Bates (WLB) and his sanitariums
(don't like "sanitaria") - he had one in Providence (1893-1917) and one in Jamestown (1900-1944). WLB married first Rebecca Jospehine Lewin (they met in the Providence Reform School - he was there for larceny and she for vagrancy). They married in 1876, had two children and divorced in 1884. Rebecca married John Joseph Scattergood (JJS) in 1886 in Boston. (These dates are from memory so I hope I am correct) At some point they divorced and she then married George L. Howes, in Revere, Mass., in 1910. They then went to Hollywood where they both died but are buried on Cape Cod. When WLB and Josephine divorced he then raised the son and she the daughter. JJS seems to have been important in the daughter's life and she called him "Papa."
. . . WLB kept a notebook with odds and ends of information - there are many references to the Scattergoods - at some point I think JJS and WLB worked together for the Union Railroad Co. (using horse-drawn trolleys). He also referred to "the tribe of Scattergoods." I quess there was then, but they seem to have all left RI. . ."

- 1888: August 4, I learned today that 2 or 3 weeks ago Thos Scattergood was arrived in Boston, Mass by his __?__.
November 11, Carrie called JJS "Papa."
- 1889: July 11, Wm 3 Scattergood and his wife Abbie insulted me on ? St (witness)
September 17, Joe S (JJS) was very insulting and threatening.
- 1890: April 12, rec'd 2 Telegrams from RI - one from Ed Scattergood, JJS's brother and the other from Nellie Goll saying R * and all had returned.
* note: [? Rebecca J. L. Scattergood, her daughter Carrie and husband JJS ?]
April 22, Joe S (JJS) drove along side of my car and had a great deal to say and with other things called me a white son of a bitch and said he would smack my head if I came out to Woonsocket. They all feel very bad to think they got left out seeing my boy Willie. Miller was on the car says he shall complain of him to the Chief of Police.
April 30, Miller the merchant on NM st after meeting is very much worked up over Joe and his action by the car the other day.
- 1892: March 14, JJ Scattergood insulted me from NM St to the foot of Cano St. Called me very many hard things. I was forced to keep my mouth shut as usual. A red faced English woman of Wagle Park heard and saw him.
May 19, JJS had a good deal to say.
May 20, JJS was at me again today

Sue Madden,
Your guy John J Scattergood of Providence is listed in the Albany Directory on ANCESTRY.COM. "John J. Scattergood clerk 110 North Main house 39 Vandewater Providence RI 1890, 1891, 1892" The 110 Main Street address was the SCATTERGOOD FURNITURE STORE that was founded in England by William SCATTERGOOD. If you go to the SCATTERGOOD-MOORE website you will see photos of the Providence Scattergoods. They were his ancestors.
Good Luck
Jim Scattergood
