Schulz, Bruno Drohobycz Poland 1892-1942 brunoschulz.org | ru | pl Born in a small town in Drohobycz (now Drogobych, Ukraine), into a Jewish family. His father ran a clothing shop, but left it to the care of his wife due to his poor health. Schulz studied architecture...specializing in lithography and drawing. After returning to his native town he worked from 1924 to 1939 as an art teacher in the local gymnasium. Schulz did not start his literary career until the 1930s; he wrote his stories in Polish although he knew both Yiddish and German. He is best known for his short stories and as the author of The Street of Crocodiles and The Sanatorium under the Sign of the Hourglass (1937). His brief career ended tragically during World War II, when he was gunned down by a German officer in the Nazi occupied ghetto of Drohobycz.
