Gwathmey, Robert, USA, 1903-1988
"Every work of art done with conviction is autobiographical." [R. G.] Born in Virginia in 1903, Gwathmey was a member of the Artists Union, Artists Equity in New York City, and the American Artists Congress, Gwathmey participated in the social movements of the Left and joined the Communist party in the 1930s. He destroyed most of his painting from the 1930s claiming they were apprentice work. |
