| Gifford, Charles Henry USA 1839-1904 Charles Gifford was born and died in Fairhaven. Although his parents encouraged him to try carpentry and shoemaking, he eventually became a noted painter of marine scenes. At the age of twelve, he had been deeply influenced by seeing an exhibition of Albert Bierstadt's paintings. |

Swain Gifford was born on Naushon, his father was the boatman to William Swain, then the island's owner and founder of the Swain School, for whose son he was named. R. Swain introduced to art the windbent trees and changeful marshes of New England. He was the first to realize their picturesque beauty. His last years were spent in New York City and Nonquitt, Mass. |
