Donnell, Radka, Sofia, 1928 (quilts) Bulgarian-born painter who gave up her brushes in 1965 to work full time with the medium of the pieced quilt. After emigrating to the United States in 1951, Donnell received her B.A. degree from Stanford and an M.F.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In the early 1970s she lived in Boston, and her decidedly nontraditional quilts strongly affected many younger artists in the region, including Molly Upton and Susan Hoffman, Sylvia Einstein, Michael James, Rhoda Cohen, and Nancy Halpern. Radka Donnell: The Work of Touch cruated by Michael James Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, Un of Nebraska, Lincoln "Donnell's work maps the territory of the soul as well as the body, and she has consistently valued the expressive amplitude her quilts are given when draped over reclining bodies or across the expanse of bed that is the site for life's key engagements: lovemaking, childbirth, death."
