Clews Jr., Henry, USA, 1876-1937   (sculpture)

With his wife, Clews devoted 18 years to restoring the The Chateau de la Napoule and peopling it with the sculptured demons and familiars of his visions. On archways he carved scaly sea monsters, on columns, beak-nosed gargoyles, while from every niche and shadow leered the grotesque beings of Clews labeled gods, jinns, ogs and wogs. Over them all, at the entrance to the castle, he chiseled the motto Once Upon a Time.

"One of the most important German Impressionist painters, he gradually became more and more expressionist in his art early in the second decade of the 20th century. Originally fiercly hostile to expressionism, he underwent a major transformation, perhaps reflected in the brooding quality of his work. After Hitler came to power, his works were posthumously declared decadent and they were exhibited with the other German Expressionists declared morally unfit by the Nazis and burnt in the Nazi bonfires."   [Spaightwood Galleries]
