Dry Eyes/Dry Mouth

Tears

are the body's method of protecting the eyes from contaminants. They are also a means of detoxifying internal organs.

Saliva

protects the teeth from cavities and initiates the process of digestion. It is also used by the body to distribute electrolytes, hormones and other vital substances.

The body's capacity to produce these vital fluids can be enhanced through the application of some simple techniques combining placement of the tongue on the palate, various postures, visualization, meditation and self-massage.

Persons with dry mouth might be interested to learn that Taoist meditative practices emphasize the saliva and can in fact stimulate salivary flow. Practitioners are taught to place the tip of the tongue on the palate, behind the upper teeth. There is a groove there, a few centimeters back, in which the tongue easily fits. This placement connects two major meridians, or energy pathways, in the body. Repeatedly pressing the tongue against this groove stimulates the flow of saliva.
