PERSEPHONE is the daughter of the Greek Vegetation Goddess Demeter. Persephone was abducted by Hades, Lord of the Underworld to be his wife. While in the Underworld, she was tricked into eating seeds of the pomegranate, which would link her to the Underworld forever. While she was missing, Demeter wandered the Earth in sadness and refused to let crops or flowers grow. Hades was forced to return Persephone; but because she had eaten the pomegranate, Persephone must return to the Underworld for one-third of the year.
