The GREEN MAN , or Jack-in-the-Green, is the personification of vegetation . He is frequently depicted on medieval-era chapels in the British Isles, and on the shingle of many a public ale-house. His worship survives in the form of May Day festivities which celebrate the reawakening of the earth and the Greening of the land.
