WHAT EXACTLY IS A WIREHAIRED POINTING GRIFFON?

"It is a rugged and prolific breed, a bold, strong dog of decided character, notable for his faithfulness, his devotion to his master, his intelligence and great sagacity, his endurance and his all around utility."

                                    -Westminster KC Show, 1916

Developed at the end of the 19th century in Holland by Edward Karel Korthals, the Griffon was bred to possess a dense, harsh outer coat that would shed water while having a soft, downy undercoat to keep them warm. Their height at the shoulder is 20-24" and weigh 50-70 lbs. with a wonderful fuzzy face featuring a prominent mustache/beard and eyebrows.

For all the uniqueness of their physical characteristics, the most intriguing aspect about the Wirehaired Griffon is their psyche. Griffons are very intelligent, gentle and loving animals that have a great desire to be with their families. These dogs are not kennel dogs. They have an inherent need for human contact and interaction on a regular basis, without which they will become despondent and never develop to their utmost potential.

Biff isn't too happy about sharing his bed with Kayla.

Griffs are excellent family dogs with a deep desire to please, making them easily trainable. However, they are also very sensitive and require positive rather than negative reinforcement. In fact, Griffs will often freeze up rather than make a mistake if correctly harshly.

Griffs also have somewhat of an impish quality to them as well. Because they are so intelligent, they will constantly find ways to amuse themselves and you. They will also subtly test you to find out exactly what they can and cannot get away with. This is not in a destructive manner however, it often involves things like sneaking into the bedroom at night to be close to you, etc... They are "impishly mellow" and very content to lay at (or on) your feet when indoors.

Although this combination of intelligence and gentleness make the Griff an excellent family dog, to really enjoy these dogs is to see them hunt. Here it is where you will see his or her ultimate passion shine through; bringing out the very best in your dog and allowing them to develop to their fullest potential.
