DOROTHY QUINCY HANCOCK (MRS. JOHN)*

(1747-1830)

Though many have heard of John Hancock, the famous signer of the Declaration of Independence, few may know about his wife Dorothy Q. Hancock. Madame Hancock has many interesting insights to share about her life with this illustrious leader and the formative years of America's Revolution and early nationhood.

Dorothy Quincy was born the youngest of 10 children in the family home in Boston. When she was five years old the Quincys moved to Quincy, MA where she spent her youth. As a young lady Dorothy Quincy entertained many eligible callers including an officer in the British army and even the dashing Aaron Burr. However, she eventually married the wealthiest man in Boston, who became the first President of the Continental Congress and the first Governor of the new State of Massachusetts.

Known for her hospitality, the stylish Madame Hancock reminisces about the past with her guests. While she does her needlepoint, she embroiders tales with an insider's view of the American Revolution and colonial romance.
