SOME
TIPI ETIQUETTE
Proper behavior amongst the native people...as in most
societies...was governed by extensive, strict, and
often
subtle rules. The principals that follow are a
sample of the various points of etiquette that Indians
knew and heeded whey paying a social call to a friends
tipi...
If the door is open, a friend may enter the tipi
directly. But, if its closed, he should announce
his presence sometimes by scratching on the flap) and
wait for the ownerto invite him to come in.
When a male visitor enters the tipi he goes to the right
and waits for the host to
invite him to sit in the guest
place, to the owner at the rear. A woman
enters after
the man and goes to the left.
When invited to a feast; guest are expected to bring
their own bowls and spoons and, to eat all they are
given.
No visitor should ever walk between the fire and another
person, but instead should pass behind the sitters,
who
for their part lean forward to make room.
Women should never sit crossed-leg like men. They
can sit on their heels or, with their legs to one side.
In a group of men only, the older ones should start/welcome the
conversation. The younger ones should
politely remain silent unless they are invited to speak
by a elder.
When the host cleans his pipe...that's your signal its
time to...LEAVE AND GO HOME.

"Grass
Dancers"

POWWOW
ETIQUETTE
Listen
to the emcees directions and explanations.
DO NOT...photograph or video Grand Entrance, Honor
Dances, the Dropped Eagle Feather Dance, or any Ceremonial
Dances.
It is alright to photograph intertribal social
contest/dances and parades other than, Grand Entry.
Always ask people's permission to photograph them; even
their campsites or lodges. It would also be nice
to offer to send them a copy of the picture. If
you do, then be sure to send it if they say yes.
It is alright to ask them questions about their regalia
style, their name and tribal affiliation.
Please...DO NOT TOUCH...a persons regalia without
permission as it is a sacred object to each.
Please be polite, courteous, and respectful.
It would be nice to ask if they are hot or thirsty and
offer to get them some refreshment.
DO NOT...let children hang onto the ropes of the circle
or, RUN THROUGH THE CIRCLE.
DO NOT...cut across the circle to get to the other side.
Do not imitate war cries or make "WOO WOO"
noises - this is very insulting.
Remove your hat when asked to, unless it contains one or
more real eagle feathers.
Be attentive and quiet when people are speaking.
It is rude to enter the circle from any other place
other than the entry way; wear sandals, work boots,
flip
flops and the like. Wear moccasins or go
barefoot...ALTHOUGH, among some tribes only warriors
may
go barefoot...SO WATCH AND LEARN.
If your a woman...DO NOT...enter the circle while your
in your menses.
Do not trespass on private campsites and lodge areas.
*DO NOT...BRING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OR DRUGS...near or
onto powwow grounds.

HOW
TO APPROACH A MEDICINE PERSON
Walk with dignity and respect...you should never run up
to or suddenly come from behind, and ...never
interrupt
a conversation that is going on. Stand quietly on
the side and wait, no matter how long it takes
and don't
act impatient while waiting.
If you wish a private audience with a medicine person to
ask knowledge and seek wisdom, or to have a
ceremony
performed...always bring a offering of tobacco; and
begin with polite conversation first before
getting into the heart of the matter.
Never interrupt when a medicine person is speaking to
you...and for heavens sake be respectful and not silly.
Remember the only stupid question...is the question not
asked.
*NOTE
ANYONE...who goes around boasting they are medicine...or
tries to charge you a fee...
RUN LIKE HECK THE OTHER
WAY....
