Trash Can Sinatras 1999 Japan Tour

Check here for updates about TCS' 1999 Japan Tour (the "Wing of the Sun" Tour). I will try to post set lists, photos and news about the shows as soon as possible after each show. If you attend any of these shows and would like to send me any information, please e-mail me. These are TCS' first shows since playing the Bataclan in Paris on November 10, 1996.

Neo-acoustic band "The Trash Can Sinatras"; Eddi Reader's brother Francis Reader on lead vocals, will play in Japan again. TCS has been in contact with "Sunny Day Service" since they played together in Tokyo in1996. They're going to play together again and this show is going to be a TCS solo show. We haven't heared any information on TCS lately, but it seems the band is going to release their new album in 1999. There may be some sessions with Sunny Day Service.

TCS finally hit the stage to play this sold out solo show in a small (200-300 people) Tokyo club. The band rehearsed for almost an hour before the show and were nervous and excited for the show to begin, as this was their first concert since November 1996. Grant (new bass player) and Stevie (new keyboard player) were especially nervous as this was their first show in the band.

TCS played for about 60 minutes and after the encore, the crowd continued to cheer for TCS return to the stage. John Douglas came out and said "I'm sorry but we have a new bass player and keyboard player and they can't play that many songs right now, and Frank has a sore throat." Then, everyone came out (except Frank, who isn't feeling well and had already returned to the hotel) and signed autographs for the crowd.

From what I have heard, the band sounded great and seemed to be having a lot of fun, and the new songs are 'mellow'. Frank didn't play guitar at all, which is interesting since he had played when they toured in 1994-1996. We'll see if he plays in any of the shows in Japan, my guess is that he won't.

Here is the set list; TCS are expected to play a similar set on the 30th at Club Quattro:

  1. How Can I Apply...?
  2. Easy Read
  3. Leave Me Alone (new song)
  4. In Capitals (new song, John Douglas on vocals)
  5. Usually (new song)
  6. Hayfever
  7. Duty Free (new song)
  8. A Boy and a Girl (John Douglas on vocals)
  9. Weight Lifting (new song)
  10. Hammer Time (new song, John Douglas on vocals)
  11. The Hairy Years
  12. Trouble Sleeping (new song)
  13. I've Seen Everything
  14. The Safecracker

    Encore

  15. Only Tongue Can Tell

I'll add more information as available, and look for updates about the upcoming shows as well.

January 30, 1999

TCS played a sold out show at Club Quattro in Tokyo, where they last played on September 21-22, 1996. The opening band for this show was Japanese band Sunny Day Service (SDS). SDS was the opening band for TCS in 1996 as well.

By all accounts, the show was great and better than their first night in Japan, and once again, Frank did not play guitar, so it looks like this will be the setup for the rest of the shows.

Here is the set list; the songs are the same but in a different order from the previous night:

  1. Easy Read
  2. Leave Me Alone
  3. Weight Lifting
  4. Hayfever
  5. Duty Free
  6. Hammer Time
  7. How Can I Apply...?
  8. In Capitals
  9. The Hairy Years
  10. A Boy and a Girl
  11. Trouble Sleeping
  12. Usually
  13. I've Seen Everything
  14. The Safecracker

    Encore

  15. Only Tongue Can Tell (performed with Sunny Day Service)

I guess we can probably expect the majority of the songs to stay the same, but maybe they'll change it up a little bit each show. If I hear of anything else, I'll post an update.

January 31, 1999

TCS played another sold out show at Club Quattro in Tokyo. While TCS are the headline act, I think a lot of peole are there to see Sunny Day Service (SDS). For the second night in a row, Sokabe from SDS told the crowd that TCS are the best band in the world! Northern Bright was the first to perform and for a cover of Small Faces' "Song of a Baker" they were joined on stage by TCS' manager, George, who sang vocals.

Here is the set list; the songs are the same (with one addition) but in a different order from the previous night:

  1. Easy Read
  2. Leave Me Alone
  3. Weight Lifting
  4. How Can I Apply...?
  5. Hammer Time
  6. Duty Free
  7. Hayfever
  8. Trouble Sleeping
  9. In Capitals
  10. Usually
  11. The Hairy Years
  12. A Boy and A Girl
  13. I've Seen Everything
  14. The Safecracker

    Encore

  15. Snow (performed with Sokabe)
  16. Only Tongue Can Tell (performed with Sunny Day Service and Northern Bright)

Snow is a Harpers Bazaar cover that TCS and SDS recorded together at Shabby Road back in March 1998. This song was never released, but was played on SDS' radio show last year.

This show is said to be the best of the three so far as TCS really seem relaxed and like they're enjoying themselves. Now it's time to head into the studio. I'll post more information when available.

February 2-4, 1999

TCS spent three days in the recording studio this week. The good thing about these sessions is that there was an engineer on hand which allowed TCS to just focus on performing, as opposed to having to worry about working the controls like when they're at Shabby Road. I don't know exactly what they worked on, if this was all new TCS songs or if they spent time recording with Sokabe. TCS did record a new song called "Co-Star".

TCS are having a great time on this tour, especially as SDS and Northern Bright are huge TCS fans who are doing their best to make sure TCS are seeing the sights and enjoying themselves.

February 7, 1999

TCS played a sold out show at Bayside Jenny's in Osaka. The club was 'packed' and it's estimated that there were around 1,500 people there. The opening bands for this show were again Northern Bright and Sunny Day Service (SDS). Once again, TCS' manager joined Northern Bright on stage for a cover of Small Faces' "Song of a Baker".

Here is the set list; there is one new song and two deletions from the previous shows:

  1. Easy Read
  2. Leave Me Alone
  3. How Can I Apply...?
  4. Hammer Time
  5. Duty Free
  6. Hayfever
  7. Trouble Sleeping
  8. In Capitals
  9. Usually
  10. A Boy and A Girl
  11. Co-Star
  12. I've Seen Everything
  13. The Safecracker

    Encore

  14. Snow (performed with Sokabe)
  15. Only Tongue Can Tell (performed with Sunny Day Service and Northern Bright)

February 9, 1999

TCS played the final show of their brief Japanese tour at Drum Logos in Fukuoka. The opening bands for this show were again Northern Bright and Sunny Day Service (SDS). By now, we know the routine: TCS' manager joins Northern Bright for a cover of the Small Faces' "Song of a Baker" and the other bands join TCS for a song or two.

Here is the set list:

  1. Leave Me Alone
  2. Hammer Time
  3. How Can I Apply...?
  4. Duty Free
  5. In Capitals
  6. Easy Read
  7. A Boy and A Girl
  8. Trouble Sleeping
  9. Usually
  10. Hayfever
  11. The Hairy Years
  12. I've Seen Everything
  13. The Safecracker

Encore

  1. Co-Star (performed with Sokabe singing backup vocals)
  2. Snow (performed with Sokabe)
  3. Only Tongue Can Tell (performed with Sunny Day Service and Northern Bright)

TCS' tour was considered a huge success and special thanks go to Northern Bright and especially Sunny Day Service for all of their help to make this tour a reality and for making TCS' stay in Japan a memorable one.

TCS will return to Japan for at least one more show (at some sort of festival) in October.
