Otters Here, There, Everywhere
Class of 1990:
John Beisty is still in Chicago, apparently pursuing a music career while
moonlighting with Andersen Consulting... John Blasi was engaged this summer with a wedding planned for the
summer of '95... Pat Crawford is in Berkeley, CA working for FEMA (Federal Emergency Management
Association), which coordinates relief for major catastrophes. Wife Elise is in her first year at Berkeley Law
School... John Dice is a general medicine physician at Wright Patterson Air Force Base hospital in Dayton...
Joe DiMaria has been sued by John Dice for slander after John's update from Issue 1 was repeated verbatim
in the class update section of a recent issue of Notre Dame Magazine. If this happens again in next ND Magazine
update, Jim Malloy might just try to kill me. I spent most of my summer working on my new house and in
Quakertown, PA. I just finished teaching a month long training class for 25 new Price Waterhouse Boston
hires and had gone to a training class in Chicago, where I went on a Cubs Trip with Maloney, Beisty and
Leahy... Chris Donnelly didn't have much to say other than pointing out that he correctly predicted Blasi's
engagement (see Issue 2)... Gerard Fitzgerald is still in Randolph, NJ, and has been named the Salesman of
the Year for Interboro/Kronos. Nutley hasn't been able to enjoy this honor as he is seething over the fact that
someone stole the "H" off the trunk of his Honda Accord... Tom Floyd called to let me know that nothing
interesting is going on. Well, he is going to Australia for 5 weeks in January... Chris Hardart still works
for the NFL and has just finished putting together his own presentation on proposed solutions for the salary cap
issues for the NFL Management Committee... Joe Hayes has moved back to Charlevoix, MI and works for his
father's law firm... John Immonen continues to pursue a music career in Chicago with his band
Tarnation...Alex Kondracki has recently relocated to Atlanta where he works for GTE doing pricing for
Cellular (and he couldn't even figure out how to hook up a conference call when Gerard and I were on the phone
with him)...Mark Korzenecki wrote in to tell us his story: After graduation he landed a position with the
U.S. Embassy in Moscow, and worked there until March 1993 on the Soviet Refugee program for the
Immigration and Naturalization Service. He was there for the coup in August 1991, and drove some tanks
around. Back in the U.S., he is working for Chemical Waste Management in the corporate office in Oakbrook,
IL. Mark is engaged to be married on April 29, 1995... Brian Leahy is in his second year of the Psychology
Masters program at the University of Wisconsin at Madison... Wally Maloney finally came back from his
Andersen Consulting project in Mexico City after a year, and got to spend a couple of weeks at home in Chicago
before being shipped out to Ohio... Jim Malloy has been to 37 weddings in the past 3 months. He's living so
far beyond his means that when he goes to the plasma (among others) donation center, people yell out "Jim"
like they used to yell out "Norm". His success rate in his insurance litigation at Byrne & Neidhart in Scranton
would make Robert Shapiro envious... Vince Martinez called in with the following: after graduation he
worked for Norwest Bank in Phoenix, and now he is in cash management consulting with First Interstate Bank
in Tucson... Mike McCabe is believed to be in Baltimore... Vince thinks Mark McFadden is teaching English
and JV lacrosse at Avon Old Farms High School in Avon, CT. He is also pursuing a Master's in English... Brian
Murray made good on his promise in the spring Screamin' Otter Periodical and passed the May CPA Exam...
Vince says Greg Nowakowski was working in New York as an analyst for a commercial real estate company
and, according to Greg, "Travels a lot, always picks up new babes, flies airplanes, made a million dollars,
etc..." Greg is believed to be moving to San Francisco... Brian O'Keefe has settled into a disturbing state of
domestication after acquiring a new female roommate. He's proud to announce he had his first double-double
(10 points, 12 rebounds) and broke the team rebounding record (his team has a bunch of midgets). He's not
proud to admit that his life revolves around the 8-10:00 P.M. television time slots. Each night. Every night...
Tim O'Keefe wrote in with his update: After graduating from Sorin College, he spent a year doing volunteer
work in Kentucky. He worked in an ILS (Independent Living Skills) program teaching mentally handicapped
adults how to cook, shop, use money, play foosball, etc. (Okay, maybe I did add that last part). From there, he
went to the University of Texas (Austin),received his MA in Philosophy, and is now starting work on his
dissertation. Tim also works as a Teaching Assistant and has been dating the same woman (another philosophy
grad student) for 2 1/2 years (as of June)... Joel Passinault is teaching history and religion at Catholic
Central in Grand Rapids. He is also the Assistant Varsity Football coach and his team is 4-0... Jim Schilder
wrote in to tell us that he went to Ohio State Law. After graduation, he headed west to Phoenix, where he
clerked for a judge and he now works as the Chief Deputy Greenlee County Attorney, in Eastern Arizona. He
loves exploring the mountains and ran a marathon in the Grand Canyon. He promised to be the National
Championship ticket broker, but this was before the Irish lost two straight games. Maybe next year. Jim
purchased the first voluntary Screamin' Otter Periodical subscription... Scott Sonnek sent an E-mail with
the following information: He received his MS in Psychology from New Mexico Highlands University, and is
now at the University of Wyoming working on a PhD in Clinical Psychology, with 2-3 years until he hopefully
finishes. He has been married for 2 1/2 years to a Texan he met while in New Mexico, and is the stepfather to
"a bright and rambunctious" 8 year old boy. He enjoys driving around in his 4x4 pickup, hunting, hiking and
camping, and looks forward to roadtripping to ND's next game at Air Force (the way things are going, we
probably won't even win)... Michael Stonebreaker was signed by the New Orleans Saints, but after giving
Jim Everett a concussion in practice during a non-contract drill, was released in September... Tom Zidar
was engaged to Marianne Haggerty (ND '93) with the wedding planned for July 22, 1995. Tom spent the
summer working in the Tombstone Pizza division of Kraft as a Business Planner (single handedly putting
together multi-million dollar acquisitions, while arranging the financing and marketing). Tom played in the
PIT basketball tournament in Washington, D.C. this summer and was named MVP, despite the presence of many
blue-chip high school players. Tom is in his second year at Kellogg working on his MBA.
Otter Alumni Update - Outside the Lines
Class of 1988:
Sean Cullinan worked for Ernst & Young in New York City (I can't remember if he
still does), was married in 1993?, and his wife Sue is now pregnant. While living the bachelor life, he lived
with Tom Zidar, Chris Hardart, and Kevin Keyes.
Class of 1989:
The following is a reprint of a letter from Ralph Parente on June 6, 1994: "Dan
Driscoll: Sad, but true, this officer and gentleman has given a final salute to the Marine Corps and has
enrolled in some preliminary classes for Dentistry School at the University of North Carolina. Word has it
that Double D plans to make patients drop and give 'em twenty for all cavities found!... Brian Farmer is still
kickin' it live in Dallas, but now peddles pills and Depend under-garments for a pharmaceutical
mega-distributor called Whitmeyer. He and his wife Julie love to hate the Cowboys and spend much of their
time assuring A&M Aggies that their conference blows!... Chris Kyhl returned to Chicago from a one year
project in Belgium with Ellen and decided to hitch up the wagon and head out west! They got as far as Des
Moines, IA and set up camp, and have bought a house. Chris is taking some time off to plan for the future (still
mooching off Ellen), and I assume, would not be opposed to running Cubs Trips on a full-time basis... Gary
McCraw is living in NYC's East Village. Gary is apparently consumed with plans for the long-awaited,
much-anticipated "Budweiser-Aztecs in Africa Lost Weekend Reunion" coming to a park bench near you this
Year! Sort of a Lollapalooza-type deal! Ralph is still trying to make contact... Ralph Parente works for
Aetna in NYC and lives on "Lon Gisland". He was married to Joanie Logan on July 30, and Kyhl and Geoff
Weidner were in the wedding... Geoff Weidner will be splitting his time between his medical school
internship and his promotion to Candy Apple/Caramel Corn Guy at the Hall of Fame. Geoff's psuedo-wiffa is
teaching in the greater Cooperstown area"...what a coincidence...
Class of 1991:
Jeff Smith called just in time to beat the printing deadline with information on the
class of 1991. He is now simply known as The Official Class of 1991 Coordinator of the Screamin' Otter
Periodical. Here goes: Chris Balcezak is in his fourth year at the University of Texas medical school, and
Jeff claims he's majoring in gynecology... Jay Blount graduated from Hastings Law School outside of LA and
now works for a law firm in Los Angeles... Dan Creamean passed the CPA Exam and works for Peat Marwick
in Chicago. He lives with Mike Bregenzer, who graduated from the University of Illinois Law School in '94
and now works for a law firm in downtown Chicago, and Tim O'Shaughnessy who works at the Chicago Board
of Mercantile Exchange and hopes to buy a seat there someday... Bob Dengler worked for LaSalle Bank in
Chicago, and is now in his second year at Villanova Law School... Ken Kennedy works for Andersen Consulting
in Chicago, but is on a project in Minnesota... Dave McKenna married Becky Miller (ND '91) and both are at
St. Louis Medical School... Jim McMullen worked at Deloitte & Touche in Dallas and has just started in the
MBA program at the University of Texas... Pat Monahan works for Boeing in Seattle and is also working on an
MBA... Kevin O'Connor is in Atlanta as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Georgia. He and Beth
Pollack (SMC '91) were married in August '93 in Atlanta... Mike Shinnick was with Andersen Consulting in
Chicago, then left to start his own business. He now works for another consulting firm in Chicago... Jeff
Smith went to DePaul, where he received his MBA in Accounting, passed the CPA Exam, and has worked for
Arthur Andersen in Chicago for the last three years Jeff was married to Nora Melchert (SMC '91) on
11/27/93... Pat "Sticks" Souter is still playing drums and is the 'right-hand man' for Cook County (IL)
Treasurer Aurelia Pacinski... Jeff swears this is true, but I think he was just trying to see if I'm as gullible as
Pink: Don Stager tried out as a Los Angeles Rams cheerleader, but Jeff doesn't think he made it... Mark
Thumser is at Vanderbilt Law School... Pat Walsh lives in South Bend and works for Anthony Travel in
LaFortune... C.G. Wander is in Strategic Air Command at Offit Air Force Base in Belview, NB... Dan Ward is
in his fourth year at St. Louis Medical School... Joel Williams analyzes companies for a venture capital firm
in Washington, D.C.... Tom Wiltberger sold elevators for three years in Iowa, Chicago and Denver ("It's a
real up and down business") and is now back in Chicago, looking for a sales job in heavy machinery... Finally,
in the true spirit of the Screamin' Otter Periodical, Jeff wanted to let me know that when we have the next
Cubs Trip or Inverse Cubs Trip, Dan Creamean and Ken Kennedy claim they can out-shotgun John
Beisty and Dan Driscoll! Now those are fightin' words!...
Class of 1992:
Courtesy of Jay Burke: Pat Clarke and John Gleason live together in Bucktown in
Chicago... Steve Fortunato has completed his first year of Fordham Law School and is ranked first in his
class. Is already being wooed by big time law firms who must be confusing him with Tom Cruise... Dan Laboe
has been with the Peace Corps in New Guinea since graduation. When he first got there babies would cry when
he walked down the main road because they'd never seen white faces before (is that the real reason?)
Class of 1993:
Courtesy of Jay Burke, who works for Andersen Consulting in Chicago and lives in a
Wrigley Field rooftop apartment... Mike Bartley lives in Chicago and consults for CSC. He's still playing
guitar and is training for the Chicago Marathon... Brendan Blockowicz lives in Chicago with Bryan
Krayer and PJ Stettin and consults for Ernst & Young... Matt Casey and Pete Bevacqua are still
chumming it up as roomies at Georgetown Law (you'd think they'd get sick of each other). Pete is still
claustrophobic and afraid of woman and Matt is studying like a nut... Shannon Cullinan moved to South Bend,
lives with his brother Matt and works at Anthony Travel in LaFortune. In January, he will be moving in with
Chris Nanni. If you need football tickets, don't call him; but if you need travel reservations, do call
(1-800-DOMERS2). Look for Shannon to resurrect Tequila White Lightning with the Nanni brothers this
year... Sean Kelley is supposedly living in Los Angeles with wife Maria (SMC '93)...
