OLTGASM

Okay, so another Toxiegasm.
When I obsess over something I tend to draw it again and again. I
think that what I'm trying to do is simultaneously capture/own the thing
which absorbs me and understand it through re-creating it. And re-creating
it many many times affords me the opportunity to understand it in new ways.
This one served as the beginning of a series of transformations loosely
based on the Toxie images I had been creating. They are essentially
doodles like one might do on a napkin or in the back of a notebook.
These, however, were done on the exquisite handmade pages of a unique steel-bound
sketchbook brought to me as a gift from Venice. I then tore out these
sheets and glued them to cast aside cardboard (previously used as dividers
for 45rpm records) to make oversized postcards out of them. There
is something I enjoy about the intermixing of the precious and the commonplace,
the elegant and the clumsy, the corner-of-the-mouth napkin-dabbing of the
gourmet and the belching of the all-night diner.
