The list that I have gathered for tricks and terms is not too bad but, you also really should
check out SOL's snowboard dictionary. its huge and really quite impressive.
snowboarding terms and basic tricks.
- 3,5,7,9
- 360, 540, 720 and 900 degree spins are sometimes called "three, five, seven and nine" to simply shorten the name. Example, a "backside five" is a backside 540 spin.
- Air
- simply going airborne off a jump or "kicker"
- Alley-oop
- an "Alley-oop" is a 180 halfpipe turn spun in the uphill direction.
- Backside
- during the first 180 degrees of any in-the-air rotation your back is facing downhill.
- Backside wall
- the wall of the halfpipe that your back faces when doing a "standard" 180 halfpipe turn.
- Bone-out
- to accent a trick by straightening out and stiffening one of your legs. Example, a "boned-out tailgrab" means you would stiffen the front leg, lean way back and grab the tail of the board.
- Drop
- something you say (loudly, so all can hear!) to indicate that you are next to attempt a kicker or "dropping-in" to the halfpipe.
- Duck
- having your bindings set so that your feet point away from one another. Example +12deg on front binding. -5 deg on back binding.
- Fakie
- an "old school" term which means the same thing as "switch"
- Fronside wall
- the wall of the halfpipe that the front of your body faces when doing a "standard" 180 halfpipe turn.
- Frontside
- during first 180 degrees of in-the-air rotation the front of your body remains facing mostly downhill.
- Gap
- a jump with very distinct take-off and landing transitions and a deep gap between the two. May be small…such as jumping a gully. Or huge...Such as jumping an entire roadway!
- Goofy
- a right foot foward stance on the snowboard is called goofy. Left foot forward is called "normal" or "regular"
- Grab
- any time you grab the board while in the air. See "method, tail, mute, indy, nose" etc.
- Heelside
- a turn made on the edge of your board which is below the heels of your feet.
- Indy grab
- grabbing the toeside edge with your rear or trailing hand.
- Kicker
- any jump or launch.
- Method
- while in the air bend you knees to bring the board perpendicular to the ground. with your leading hand, grab the heelside edge near your front foot and throw your trailing hand into the air. Hold position as long as possible
- Mute grab
- grabbing the toeside edge with your lead or front hand.
- Ollie
- launching your board off the ground without the aid of a kicker. To do this, bend your knees. Lift up the nose of the board and then spring off the tail of the board…all in one motion.
- Shifty
- while in the air. Turn your board as if to do a "180" but return it to normal just before landing.
- Spins
- any in-the-air rotation. Expressed in degrees of rotation. Example "180" or "Frontside 360" or "backside switch 720"
- Stale fish
- grabbing the heelside edge with your trailing hand.
- Switch
- doing any type of riding or trick while going "backwards" on your board. Example. A "Switch 180" means hit the jump going backwards. Spin 180 and land riding forward.
- Tabletop
- a type of jump with a long, flat top which is usually on level with the peaks of the takeoff and landing transitions.
- Tail grab
- grabbing the tail of the board in the air.
- Toeside
- a turn made on the edge of your board which is below your toes.
