Winter Clothing
In order to stay warm and comfortable in winter weather just remember two simple
things.
- Layer your clothes
- Cotton is EVIL
Layering clothes traps air between the layers and this helps keep you warm.
Also, as the outside temperature changes you can better regulate your warmth by removing
or adding layers as needed. Remember also that the fabrics should be breathable and not
tend to hold onto moisture. The water absorbing nature of cotton is exactly what makes
it so evil for outdoor winter activities. when wet it loses all of its heat retaining
properties.
Next to your skin wear a thin CoolMax, Polypro or thermal silk layer. On top of this
a mid-weight thermal Polypro layer and finally a wool or Polarfleece sweater on top of
that. (If your jacket has a lot of insulation you may find the sweater layer isn't
necessary.)
Also, NEVER go without a hat. even if it is a nice bluebird day keep it in your
pocket "just in case". mountain weather changes very quickly and your body loses tons
of heat through your head so, when the weather changes for the worse and you begin
shivering... you'll be glad you brought the hat.
