Windell's Snowboard Camp

June 24th to July 3rd, 1998.

I had been snowboarding for three seasons and thought I was starting to get pretty good. I could carve some good high speed turns, tackle any steep runs in the East and even conquer all but the ugliest mogul fields. The problem was though, once my board left the ground (for reasons intended or un-intended) my riding skills took a serious turn for the worse. I needed coaching in a big way and the thought of riding in the middle of summer sounded like a blast. So, it was off to camp I went.

Windells camp is set up on a year-round snowfield located at the Timberline Resort on Mount Hood, Oregon. The Windells training area is off-limits to the general public and it consisted of two halfpipes (one competition size, the other a bit smaller) numerous jumps, rails and "mailboxes" (for practicing jibbing and sliding) and the giant "Super Kicker" jump. Campers can also make use of the public terrain parks and jumps as well as general riding trails on the mountain.

For 8 days my group, which consisted of myself, roommates Ken and Nick and coach Jeff Fulton, practiced turns, riding fakie, ollies, jumping, spinning and riding the halfpipe.
