The Friends of the Plymouth Pound was started in 1985 by a small group of concerned citizens assisting the animal control officer in the historic town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Since its incorporation in 1989, the Friends of the Plymouth Pound and its volunteers have assisted thousands of local people and cats and dogs (both family pets and strays) by providing support through the group's various programs, which include low-cost spaying/neutering assistance, adoption and foster care, and educational outreach.
The Friends of the Plymouth Pound operate no-kill cat and dog shelters in Norwood and Manomet, Massachusetts. The shelter in Norwood is operated in cooperation with the Petco pet store located on Route One. Basically, we take care of the animals in our custody for however long it takes for us to find them homes.
The Friends of the Plymouth Pound also have an active foster care program and a sponsorship program for homeless cats, providing loving "transition" homes for these animals while they await adoption. Volunteer "foster parents" generously use their own money to pay for food and litter for the foster cats, which is supplemented whenever possible by the Friends of the Plymouth Pound. In addition to supporting the group's spay/neuter program, a significant portion of the monetary donations received is used to provide the animals in foster care with veterinary services including examinations, inoculations, tests, surgery and prescription medications.
The Friends of the Plymouth Pound relies solely on donations from the general public, as well as the care and devotion of its dedicated volunteers.
