FELINE UROLOGICAL INFECTIONS

Does you cat urinate outside the litter box? If so, then your cat might have a urinary tract infection. This is a very common feline problem and it can be easily treated by your vet. To determine if your cat has a urinary tract infection, follow these simple steps:

  1. Obtain a clean plastic litter box.

  2. Cover the bottom of the litter box with clean aquarium pebbles. These aquarium pebbles are available at any pet store which sells fish supplies. Note, only use enough pebbles to cover the bottom of the box. You do not want to completely fill the litter box as you would normally do!

  3. Replace your cat's normal litter box with this litter box.

  4. As soon as possible after your cat has urinated in the litter box, drain the urine into a clean covered container such as a baby food jar.

  5. Take the container of urine as soon as possible to your veterinarian for examination. Note, you must take the urine specimen to the veterinarian within 24 hours. Refrigerate the urine if you can not take the specimen to your vetrinarian immediately.

If your veterinarian determines that your cat has a urinary tract infection, he or she will probably prescribe antibiotics which will take care of the problem. If you have any questions about feline urinary tract infections, contact the Friends of the Plymouth Pound or your local veterinarian.
