Annual Ned Green Scholarship Fund
Memorial Hike
May 13, 2006, Saturday, 10:00 am to noon

A group of intrepid hikers braved the rain which subsided during the morning for the 2.5 mile hike on Mt. Grace, Warwick. Nature's beauty provided hikers with surprises. The delicate white flowers of wild gingseng and goldthread were noticed. A wood thrush's inspiring melody was heard. Misty waves of hillside foliage of fresh spring greens were seen from atop the 1,600 ft. mountain. Appreciation is extended to the community of people who raised more than $600.00 for the Ned Green Scholarship Fund at PVRS. Scholarships are awarded at the PVRS graduation.

To quote Ned:
"The M-M Trail was attractive to me because it floated silently over Mt. Grace which is located in my old home of Warwick. It has been several years enigmatic, mysterious and a source of wonder....To understand my human ecology which is bonded to spirituality, I felt it necessary to be in close contact with nature. Walking afforded me this connection...."

Scholarship Award

The Ned Green Scholarship Award is given with the hope that the recipient will carve his or her destiny while potentially contributing to the fields of Environmental Sciences, Human Ecology, Social Services or Outdoor Leadership and Recreation. It may not always be clear, well-marked path, but I hope the qualities of determination, perseverance and humor which Ned exhibited in his search for statement will accompany and bless the recipient on his or her journey.

To quote from Shannon's essay: "One of my favorite past-times is the Pioneer Outing Club. I remember going to Mount Cardigan, NH, with the gang and hearing stories about Ned Green; his courage, his kindness and his inspiration. We would sit around the fire in the lodge and talk about the future and the past and how much everything was going to change......I want to teach kids healthy habits and i want to help those without healthcare get the attention that they need. I would like to give back to the world, the way Ned Green did."

A Little History

Pioneer Graduation, Northfield, MA

"There is no such thing as bad weather, only your attitude." - Ned Green

I extend heartfelt appreciation to all of you of the Pioneer community; friends, families, staff, and the Outing Club. Now for a bit of history, Ned graduated from Pioneer with a small class of 37students in 1992. He then attented U-Mass. Amherst for his Freshman year, spent a semester at Keene State College, and proceeded to receive an Associates from Greenfield Community College. From the College of Atlantic in Bar Harbour, Maine, he graduated with an environmental degree in Human Ecology in 1997. His path may have been a bit circuitous, but adventurous; as his destiny evolved before him. Ned met the fullness of his heart's desires by working in the Mtns. as trail crew and caretaker. During his short professional life, he touched many lives and these stories continue to touch many of us. Just this week I received another letter from a Pioneer chum of his, Jarrett Duncan. I'd like to quote from his letter: "Ned was a great person and we shared a lot of times together, even though we caused some harmless trouble together, they were great times. There are probably some stories out there that haven't been let out! (Jarrett doesn't know, but I have heard a few of those stories.) Jarrett continues to write. The one thing that I think about the most is what Ned taught me about being your own person. One part of Ned's personality was his freedom. Ned was able to express his true thoughts, do what he wanted to do. We always argued about the environment and wanting to do our part in trying to make a difference by working to preserve it. Ned opens my eyes and makes me realize that I need to follow my beliefs and do something for what I care about. That's why I respected Ned so much, he was able to follow his heart. These past few months have been hard for all of us and have allowed for a lot of reflection on what we've all learned from Ned. He was a special person and a great friend. Ned helped me to realize that the world has so much to offer and not to get caught up in what everyone else is doing if you don't want to, do what you desire - be yourself." End of quote. (I wish this for all of you graduating tonight.)
