From the Pastor's Desk

THE MIRACLE - Tess was a precocious 8 year old when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were not able to pay for the operation he needed. As Mom and Dad finished their conversation they said, “What can we do? Only a miracle can save him.” Tess went into her room and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet. She opened the jar and counted its contents. She twisted the cap back in place and slipped out the back door. At the corner drug store, she waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy talking to a man in front of her. Tess scuffed her feet on the floor. She cleared her throat but nothing could get the pharmacist’s attention. Finally she set the jar of money on the counter with a sharp bang. That did it. The druggist looked over the counter at her and barked, “And what do you want little girl?” Tess said, “I want to talk with you about my little brother. He is very sick. He has something bad growing inside his head. My Daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell miracles here, little one. I’m sorry,” the pharmacist said. “Listen,” said the girl, “I have money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” The other customer stooped down next to Tess. He was well dressed and kind. He asked Tess, “What kind of miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” said Tess, her eyes filling with tears. “I just know he’s really sick and needs an operation. That’s why I want to use my money.” “How much do you have?” asked the man. “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered. “Well what a coincidence.” smiled the man, “that is exactly the price of miracles for little brothers.” He took her jar of money in one hand and her mittened hand in the other and said, "I want to meet your brother and talk to your parents." Let’s see if we can find that miracle for you.” That man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a neurosurgeon. The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long until Andrew was home and doing well. A miracle is not the suspension of natural law, but the operation of a higher law. Thanks be to God!
