Lady Black Knights captaivate Stoughton with tournament run
This year, Stoughton experienced “March Madness” first hand, as the SHS girls’ basketball team made a run through the Division 1 South Sectional Basketball Tournament. The 17-1, Hockomock League Champion Black Knights received the number 2 seed in the tournament, and hosted Falmouth in the opening round. MORE>>>
Varsity baseball optimistic about season
After a successful campaign that led to the second round of the state tournament last year, the boys’ varsity baseball team looks to advance further this season. There are many new faces, but a solid core of veterans remain to provide leadership on and off the field. “I think we will contend for the Hockomock League title this year,” said senior second baseman Dan Leonard. The complete hockey east experience
The story begins with the end of the 1999-2000 Boston University hockey season’s thrilling 4OT ending to St. Lawrence in the NCAA East Regionals. After becoming a devoted Boston University hockey fan, I started up my own BU Hockey website, and ‘www.buhockey.net’ was born. As the season neared, the website grew. MORE>>>
Leading the cheers
The varsity cheerleaders recently closed their season with much to boast about. Since last August they’ve worked hard to make SHS proud and to be a team that will be remembered. The squad’s success started with optimism in August when they attended NECA (New England Cheerleading Association) cheer camp at Western New England College in Springfield. MORE>>>
Winter sports announces award winners
With the change in season comes the end of another sports season. On March 12, winter sports awards were given out to many deserving All-stars and sportsmanship Athletes. In basketball, Captain Matt Batchelder led the Knights in scoring with 18.2 and demonstrated why he should be the M.V.P for the Knights. “I believe I deserve this award because I played well on both ends of the court,” Batchelder said. 'Obey'ing the pitch
Tommy Obey, senior, a pitcher from the Stoughton High School Varsity Baseball Team, hopes to be a pitcher on the Worcester State College Baseball Team next year. Obey has talked to the Worcester State coach about playing baseball there next year, and still awaits the final decision. Obey is an all-around good baseball player, but pitching is his favorite. “I’ve pitched ever since I started to play,” said Obey. MORE>>>
XFL: Love It of Leave It
A new football league has been born. The parents: Vince McMahon of WWFE (World Wrestling Federation Entertainment) and Dick Ebersol of NBC; The child: the XFL. NFL Hall of Famer, Dick Butkus, is the Director of On-Field operations in the newest league to challenge the NFL and the Super Bowl. MORE>>>
Fall football's optimistic outlook
The 2001 Stoughton Black Knights football team has only two returning starters out of twenty-two, due to graduation, but the whole league has suffered great losses. For example, there are five players that are going on to play Division1 and 1AA football. Because the league’s powerhouse teams last season were made up of mostly seniors, most teams should be in the same situation as the Knights. MORE>>>
Freshman Varsity Basketball Player
Rolland Millien, a 6’4” freshman basket ball player, is a great help to the varsity team.This enormous athlete is all over the court when he hears that buzzer. With incredible crossovers and his ability to shoot, the other team has no capability of stopping him. MORE>>>
Knights Hockey team misses states by one point
In a must win or tie game for the Knights Hockey team, everyone played strong, but Bourne outskated Stoughton, and they couldn’t seem to put the puck in the net. This was a tough game for everyone because their hopes of making the state tournament were shot down. MORE>>>
Girls are icing hockey
After Minnesota introduced Varsity Girls Ice Hockey in 1994, it has exploded so that most high schools now have a team specifically for girls. Canton, Dedham and Brookline, which offer girl’s ice hockey as a varsity sport, give their girls a chance to show everyone that they aren’t just ice princesses. What women might not have in strength, they replace with incredible determination and stamina. MORE>>>
Boys' swimming finishes with much improvement
The SHS swim team performed well this year with a fun season where all improved their times, even though they didn’t have a winning season. This year the team will lose six seniors and is in need of new swimmers. The focus isn’t on winning, although an occasional win wouldn’t hurt. MORE>>>
Shooting stars
The girls’ basketball team was outstanding, capturing the Hockomock League title after an impressive 17-1 record. Stoughton saw its most physical and intense girls’ basketball team ever, with players like Charmaine Steele, Heather Jacobs, Courtney Casserly, Danielle Pinnetti, and newcomer Christine Cotter. Freshmen make tracks
Track, as most newcomers find out, is one of the toughest sports at SHS. Athletes need to practice long, hard hours just to become good at one event, not to mention the pain that the first two weeks bring. Freshman Bryan Matthews said, “I think it is a good experience because we have more room for improvement and I feel as if I am getting faster everyday.” MORE>>>
Great strides in track and field
SHS will see many wins this year in spring track and field. Stoughton’s best shot put and discuss thrower, Jason Laferte, threw the discuss an amazing 122’ feet, and the shot put 42’7”. He predicted that the Stoughton Track team should have a winning average “of about .500.” “Our strongest events are the throwing events, 100m, 200m, 1 mile, and 2 mile,” said Laferte. MORE>>>
