Teachers react to reality show Survivor
By Paul Eagles

Mrs. Weiner enjoys watching Survivor. She likes how it is not scripted and the dynamics among the people interest her. Her one luxury item would be a deck of cards. “My biggest fear of being on this show would be getting voted off in the first round.”

Ms. Garney is not interested in reality shows, but has seen Survivor a few times. “I find it distasteful that people will resort to that type of behavior for money.” She especially disliked when they killed the pig and would never go if selected to be on the show.

Dr. Davis does not like reality shows, but has seen Survivor . “I don’t like to see groups rip at each other. I like to see cooperation.” He does not feel the reward is worth it for what the people go through. “I feel more harm comes out of it than good.”

Mrs. Foley likes to watch Survivor because it is interesting to see how the people adapt to the situations. The hardest thing about going on the show for her would be eating insects. If she won, she would buy a new house and retire.

Mr. Gallivan watched Survivor once, but it never caught on with him because he does not like reality shows. “I think the people are looking for more than the reward. They want to have their fifteen minutes of fame.” Mr. Gallivan enjoys watching historical documents, sports, and comedy sitcoms.

Ms. Levine is a big fan of reality series. She watches Survivor, Temptation Island, Real World and The Mole a couple times. She likes to see what the people are really feeling and the challenges they must face. “My one luxury item to bring on Survivor would be a bag of Funyons.” The hardest part of being on one of these shows would be losing contact with friends and family and keeping the secret of who won when the show was over.

Ms. Poillucci has watched Survivor once, but is not interested in the show. She doesn’t find them funny or entertaining. “If I were selected for one of the shows, I would not be able to go. I love subbing too much.”

Mr. Bridgeforth does not like to watch reality shows. “They aren’t reality. They are engineered and set up. They only do it for ratings.” He feels the contestants aren’t really looking for the reward so much as they are the media exposure and their fifteen minutes of fame. Some shows he enjoys are C-Span, CNN, Boston Public, The Practice, and X-Files.

Mr. Clark watched the first series of Survivor. “I like the idea of people being transplanted out of everyday life. It shows what they can find within themselves.” He would bring a radio for his luxury item for entertainment and contact with the mainstream of human society.

Mrs. Conrad watched Survivor and The Mole a couple of times. “I like the fact that people are crazy enough to do it.” Her luxury item would be a picture of her family, to keep her focused on her goal. With the prize money, she would party at first and pay for her children’s education.

Ms. Churchill watches Survivor. She likes the strategy involved and the endurance, like standing on a pole for ten hours. She would bring teabags and cups for her luxury item. “The hardest part of being on the show for me would be the bugs. I have a bug phobia.”

Mrs. Dolan watched 10 minutes of Survivor. “I am not interested in seeing people living. I enjoy watching actors act.” She does not think it is worth it to live a savage and primitive lifestyle for the reward they receive. “I don’t think eating bugs is a fun way to spend the summer.”
