The Boston Brevet Series

The Boston Brevets are a series of long distance cycling events which are also training and qualifying rides for other randonneuring events such as Boston-Montreal-Boston (BMB, summer of 2004) and Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP, summer of 2003). The series is made up of 4 traditional brevets:

200k (125 miles) • 300k (190 miles)
400k (250 miles) • 600k (375 miles)

This web site contains all the information about these rides and a downloadable registration form. If you'd like a hardcopy brochure and registration form, send your postal address to Bruce and Tracey Ingle, series organizers.

The 2003 Series

All rides start and end at Hanscom Field in Bedford, MA, and average about 3000 feet of climbing for each 100 kilometers. Because of Paris-Brest-Paris qualifying requirements, the 2003 series will start very early (early April) and the events will be relatively close together. We expect to use a new, flatter, 200k route which should be ridable with less training. We hope to arrow the 200k route, but weather conditions may make that impossible. The 2003 series is tentatively scheduled as follows:

200k
Start: April 5, 2003 7:00 am
Route: 125 miles, southeast toward Cape Cod; fully arrowed, if possible
Time Limit: 14 hours
Lights: Optional
Cost: $20.00
300k
Start: April 19, 2003 4:00 am
Route: 190 miles, south into western Rhode Island and eastern Connecticut
Time Limit: 20 hours
Lights: Required
Cost: $25.00
400k
Start: May 17, 2003 1:00 am or 4:00 am
Route: 250 miles, west to the Connecticut River valley and Berkshires
Time Limit: 27 hours (1:00 am start) / 23 hours (4:00 am start)
Lights: Required
Cost: $30.00
600k
Start: June 14, 2003 3:00 am
Route: 375 miles, southwest to Connecticut, then northwest to Vermont
Time Limit: 40 hours
Lights: Required
Cost: $45.00 (includes rustic overnight accommodations)

Support is provided for all rides, including the following:

  • Checkpoints at regular intervals
  • Detailed cue sheets
  • Water, fruit, cookies, etc., at all checkpoints
  • Validation of UMCA NPC forms
  • Bag transport to some checkpoints for the 300k, 400k and 600k
  • Challenging courses, covering almost all of the Massachusetts portion of BMB
  • The camaraderie of like-minded cyclists
