Susan was chosen as consultant for a one-of-a-kind art project which included 2 amazon parrots taught to speak an extinct language during exhibition. Susan's expertise in bird care education, habitat design and behavior consultation provided the foundation for successful achievement of the artist's goal - to use live birds taught to speak, uncued, within the exhibition aviary. This goal was achieved while providing the highest possible quality of life and environmental conditions for the birds. When not on exhibit, the birds live happily in the artist's home. Susan designed the language training program and has served as language training advisor throughout the development and exhibition of the project, 1996 to the present time. Entitled "Maypore", the name of the extinct South American Indian tribe whose language is reproduced in the show, the exhibit has been successfully presented at REALARTWAYS (Hartford, CT), WOOSTER GARDENS (NYC) and SERPENTINE GALLERY (London England). To view the project and learn more about the artist's concept and inspiration for the artwork, go to: www.realartways.org then to the archives/public art projects and click on Rachel Berwick from the pull down menu.
