Can a post-denominational, American Jew elucidate both spiritual and practical ways
to self-struggle with our traditional Jewish faith in God?

Michael Alan Ross uses his creative poetry, prose, and lyrics to construct modern midrashim and piyyutim,
prosaic and poetic commentaries to meet such a challenge.

Mr. Ross has the chutzpah, audacity, to look anew at some of our Jewish texts and experiences. As a modern, post-denominational, committed, American Jew, he seeks meaningful ways to struggle with our Jewish texts, rituals, good deeds, and beliefs. In his newly published, The Ten Commandments Guidebook, he offers many such ways. He also is author of BostonWalks' The Jewish Friendship Trail Guidebook- 6 Self-guided Jewish History Walk Tours of Downtown Boston. Here is an example of his original, creative, poetic vision of being satisfied with what one has, SPIRITUALLY:

I caught a whiff of a raspberry, In my backyard, while making tracks in the snow. So I gently brushed off my raspberry bush, And found 3 black raspberries shivering below. Carefully picking each, I blessed them as fruit of the vine, Into my kitchen, I carried and bathed them where I would dine. You will be enough for my dinner tonight said I, I will taste you slowly, let your flavor make me high. At suppertime, once more, I blessed God’s hidden tether, Which permitted wondrous creations in cold weather. The 3 raspberries looked at me, for a moment content, As I arranged them artistically like gifts from heaven sent. My raspberries’ purple, squishy, moist, delicious weave, Was my dining enjoyment on this winter’s eve. One raspberry alone would have been enough to satisfy, Is it true for raspberries, also, companionship’s the meaning of why? From a raspberry bush, I rose to heavenly ecstacy, Thanking God, for my tasteful discovery. Bless God, tonight’s world is satisfactory, Yes, it’s true, I’m filled with raspberries.

Midrashim and Piyyutim

Mr. Ross' prose and poetry about Jewish texts, his prosaic warm memories of family life, and his lyrical voicing of social concerns can be called by the Hebrew words piyyutim and midrashim, poems and commentaries, which offer uplifting, spiritual and, sometimes, challenging interpretations. In addition, Mr. Ross frequently offers many suggestions for the reader to consider in struggling with such texts as well as suggestions for good deeds.
