Can a post-denominational, American Jew elucidate both spiritual and practical ways to self-struggle with our traditional Jewish faith in God?

Michael Alan Ross uses his creative poetry, prose, and lyrics to construct modern midrashim and piyyutim, prosaic and poetic commentaries to meet such a challenge.

Mr. Ross has the chutzpah, audacity, to look anew at some of our Jewish texts and experiences.

As a modern, post-denominational, committed, American Jew, he seeks meaningful ways to struggle with our Jewish texts, rituals, good deeds, and beliefs. In his newly published, The Ten Commandments Guidebook, he offers many such ways. He also is author of BostonWalks' The Jewish Friendship Trail Guidebook - 6 Self-guided Jewish History Walk Tours of Downtown Boston. Here is an example of his original, creative, re-interpretation for progressive Jews of Maimonides classic Jewish prayer of affirmation of Jewish faith, "Ani Maamin,"

1. I pray that God is; and that God has imbued us with the ability to appreciate, to praise, and to do good. 2. I pray that God's oneness pervades the world; and that all sentient beings recognize our connectedness. 3. I pray that God's intentions and deeds are for good; and that we emulate the same. 4. I pray that someday God will permit our greater understanding of the world. 5. I pray to God alone. 6. I pray that that the guidance of Torah reflects God. 7. I pray that the leaders and teachers of the Jewish people reflect God. 8. I pray that the words of the Torah are adaptable to our changing understanding of goodness under God. 9. I pray that Jews, in particular, listen to and hear the voices of other Jews. 10. I pray that I be permitted to learn Torah, to confront Torah, to challenge Torah, and to do Torah. 11. I pray that each of us does good, irrespective of rewards or punishment. 12. I pray that the souls of everyone whom I love and cherish may somehow survive. 13. I pray that the world to come will be closer to God and shalom.

Midrashim and Piyyutim

Mr. Ross' prose and poetry about Jewish texts, his prosaic warm memories of family life, and his lyrical voicing of social concerns can be called by the Hebrew words piyyutim and midrashim, poems and commentaries, which offer uplifting, spiritual and, sometimes, challenging interpretations.
In addition, Mr. Ross frequently offers many suggestions for the reader to consider in struggling with such texts as well as suggestions for good deeds.
