THE ARTIST'S PORTRAYAL OF THE SHEPHERD'S DOG:

O. COLLEY

Many of you have seen the exquisit miniature works of O.Colley, usually for sale on eBay, and have thought, like I did, that this artist must be Scottish or Irish. So, as it will be for you, I was surprised to learn that O.Colley is really Carol Scherr, a New Englander, living in Maine.

Carol Allen Scherr (aka, O.Colley) was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She grew up by the ocean in Kittery Point, Maine, and began painting at the age of four. From the time she was a child she knew that art was a part of her world and her identity and this continues into the present.

Carol enjoyed a wonderful career in art and raised two children as a single mother on the proceeds from her paintings for many years until one day, she just couldn't paint! For ten years she went through a period without picking up a paintbrush. During this time she bought a sheep farm and began raising sheep, spinning wool and weaving rugs and blankets which she dyed with wild herbs, and began to raise Border Collies.

One day, while sitting and watching a young litter of puppies frolicking by the woodstove, Carol picked up a pencil and began to sketch the pups. One in particular seemed to enjoy all this attention and literally posed to be sketched. This little one was named OlgaColley. The rest is history. Carol began to paint the Border Collies working, resting, and posing, and since all this was inspired by one little red Border Collie named Olga Colley, Carol took this as her "nom de brush"--O.Colley.

O.Colley's work has been published in Dollhouse Miniatures Magazine and she exhibits in the Studio Gallery in Damariscotta, Maine. She is a past member of the Society of Western Artists and Gualala Arts in California. Her works include miniatures and large paintings in oils, acrylics and watercolor. Naturally, her favorite subjects are Border Collies.

Carol says:

Many of my paintings are of life on or near my small farm in Coastal Maine. It seems that in this chaotic world in which we live, the simple rural life is becoming more and more attractive. I hope that my paintings bring a smile to your face or bring back a memory to times past and just generally bring you happiness! Most of the animals I paint, including my beloved Border Collies, are animals that live here on the farm with me and my florals are plants from my own gardens. Thank you so much for viewing my paintings and taking a glimpse into my world! --O.Colley

All of the paintings on this page were miniatures, done in Acrylics
except the one at the top of the page
and the one of the Border Collie guarding the broken fence, above left.
Those two were large paintings done in oil.
