Especially for Girl Scouts, we offer opportunities approved by the
Patriot Girl Scout Council to earn Try-Its and Badges.
Participate in Special Workshops for teachers, which address specific curriculum
needs and provide hands-on materials for use in the classroom.

Reservations
should be made as far in advance as possible. School groups are encouraged
to make reservations prior to opening hours.
Our reservation policy requires a deposit of $40.00 per
tour/program which is applied to your total fee and is refundable only if
cancellation is received within 48 hours of your reservation..
All tours and programs have capacity limits in order to protect our
valuable resources and to insure the most beneficial educational
experience. All required chaperones must also accompany youths at all
times throughout the House. Additional adults are always welcome, but must
be charged tour/ program fees for admission.

Offerings for School Groups
Orchard House, one of the oldest homes in historic Concord, reflects the unique
personalities, involvements, and lifestyle of the Alcotts. A visit to this house provides testimony to the rich legacy
of writings, artwork, and
philosophical commentary they left behind.
Tours
General Tours
Feature discussions of the Alcotts home life and accomplishments.
Visitors derive a sense of how this remarkable family nurtured one another and what they
contributed to the fields of literature, art, education, and to society as a whole.
Available to Grades 3 12; 10 45 students; 30 minutes;
$4.50 per student; 1
chaperone per 15 students required and admitted free; $8.50 per each
additional adult.
"Welcome To Our Home" Tours
Interpret the House in a first person context as costumed staff portray members of the
Alcott family or their notable neighbors. Students discover how the Alcotts lived and how
they helped "make history."
Available to Grades K 12; 10 45
students; 1 hour; $7.00 per student; 1 chaperone per 15 students required
and admitted free; $10.00 per each additional adult.
"Families
Then & Now" Tours are
hands-on tours focusing on various aspects of 19th Century life and how
that life differs from our own. Through the exploration of materials in
our hands-on collection which represent work and leisure activities of a
19th Century family like the Alcotts, students will gain a greater sense
of their own links to the past and come away with a stronger feeling of
their personal place in history.
Available to Grades 2 - 5; 10 - 30
students; 1 hour; $7.00 per student; 1 chaperone per 15 students
required and admitted free. $10 per each additional adult.

"Road To Long Ago"
A highly interactive experience which explores different ways of learning
about the Past. A timeline, pictures, games, journal entries, objects,
and stories, and living history enable
students to visualize every-day life during the 19th century. The evocative
atmosphere of Orchard House, its grounds, and the School of Philosophy
building combine to create a
vivid, sensory picture of the Alcott family and their life in Concord.
Curriculum
Ties: This program links the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
for History and Social Science (Standards 1, 2, 3, 4) with English Language
Arts (Standards 1, 2, 10,
14, 15). Available only in May, June, September, and October to Grades
1 & 2; 10-30
students; 1 1/4 hours; $7.00 per student; 1 chaperone per 10 students
required and admitted free.
"A Visit With the Alcotts" A
Living History Program
An interdisciplinary experience incorporating history, language arts, and creative arts.
Step back in time and join members of the Orchard House Staff as they re-create the life
and times of the Alcotts. Students discover the elements of a story, write one of their
own, play a 19th Century game which introduces new vocabulary, and engage in an art
exercise that challenges their spatial perception.
Curriculum Ties: The
program links the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for History and
Social Science (Standards 1, 2, & 3) with English Language Arts (Standards
1, 2, & 3) and Visual
Arts (Standard 3). Available to Grades 3 5; 10 30 students;
2 hours; $7.00
per student; 1 chaperone per 10 students required and admitted free.
A 19th Century Schoolroom
Students
"become" 19th Century pupils to experience first-hand a "typical"
classroom --- with rote learning techniques --- and an Alcott-style schoolroom,
where the inquiry-discussion method is employed.

Social Science (Standards 1, 2, 3, & 4) with English Language Arts
(Standards 1, 2, & 4) and
English Literature (Standards 8 & 9). Available only in May, June,

Journey Through Journals: The Alcotts In Their Own
Words:
A special course which focuses on the importance of diary-keeping in the lives of the
Alcotts. Used variously as a daily record, a philosophical outlet, and repository of
creative ideas, journals fed and satisfied the talents of each and every Alcott. Louisa
May Alcott' journal provided her with material used to write much of Little
Women.
As students progress through the House, they will hear excerpts from Alcott diaries and
pause periodically to record their thoughts and impressions in journals of their own.
Curriculum
Ties:This interdisciplinary program links the Massachusetts
Curriculum Frameworks for English Language Arts (Standards 2, 4, & 5),
English Literature (Standards 8, 9, 13, 14, & 15), and English Composition
(Standards 20 & 22) with
History and Social Science (Standard 3). Available to Grades 5 12;
10 30
students; 2 hours; $8.00 per student; 1 chaperone per 10 students required
and admitted free.
The Alcotts and Thoreau: Landscape
and Literature
Explore the man-made and natural landscape of 19th Century Concord. This
writing and discussion program focuses on the 19th Century community
of authors, philosophers, and intellectuals (specifically Henry David
Thoreau and the Alcotts) which gathered in Concord. Hear and discuss
how each individual within the Alcott family responded to the changing
world around them, and how this was reflected in lifestyle, philosophy,
art, and literature, and the importance of Transcendentalism.
Curriculum Ties:
This program links the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for History
and Social Science
(Standards 1, 2, 3, & 4) with English
Literature (Standards 8, 9, 15, & 17). Available to Grades 10 – 12;
10 – 45 students; 1 1⁄2 hours; $8.00 per student; 1 chaperone
per 15 students required & admitted free.

Study Kits
"Discovering the Alcotts and Little
Women"
This creative and challenging unit emphasizes the differences between fiction
and nonfiction, and the importance of supporting ideas with factual evidence.
Using the fictional Little Women and nonfictional primary source documents
from the Alcotts as background texts, students will learn how an author
like Louisa May Alcott used her own life as material for her stories. In-Class
writing exercises focus on honing skills in character development, conflict,
and details. A concluding Biography Unit, using hands-on materials, encourages
students to look deeper into the real Alcotts and discover their place
in American History.
Grades: 5 – 9
