Rank and Promotion Qualifications

Waiver Promotions:  Candidates can be promoted "early" and/or without terminal degrees.

Library Assistant

• Has a baccalaureate degree
  

• Demonstrates the potential to fulfill performance criteria
   

• Is not eligible for tenure

Library Associate

• Has MLS (ALA accredited) or a specialized Master's degree
   

• Evidences potential for successful career in librarianship in an academic/research library
   

• Demonstrates potential to fulfill applicable performance criteria
   

• No one may remain in this rank for more than 5 years.

Assistant Librarian

• Has an MLS (ALA accredited)
   

• Has had 3 years full-time experience
   

• Has fully demonstrated professional competence (in an academic or research library)

Requirements for promotion to associate librarian

• 7 years full-time experience (including 3 at an academic or research library)
   

• 3 years as an Assistant Librarian

  • You should apply for promotion by April 1 of the year in which you have both  7 years of full-time teaching experience at a two-year or four-year college or university and 3 years in rank.
     

  • You will be evaluated for promotion during your 8th/3rd year.
     

  • Your promotion will become effective on September 1 of your 9th/4th year
     

• Meritorious performance as demonstrated by evaluations

Associate Librarian

• Has an MLS (ALA accredited)
   

• Has had 7 years full-time experience (including 3 at an academic or research library)
   

• Has had 4 years in rank

Requirements for promotion to librarian

• A master's degree in a second subject
  
• 4 years in rank
  
• 10 years full-time experience (including 4 at an academic or research library)
  

  • You should apply for promotion by April 1 of the year in which you have both 10 years of full-time teaching experience at a two-year or four-year college or university and four years in rank.
     

  • You will be evaluated for promotion during your 11th/5th year.
     

  • Your promotion will become effective on September 1 of your 12th/13th year
     

• Meritorious performance as demonstrated by evaluations

Librarian

• Has an MLS (ALA accredited)
   

• Has a masters degree in a second subject
   

• Has had 10 years full-time experience (including 4 at an academic or research library)
  

• 5 years in rank

• Doctor of Library Science     ------OR--------

  An appropriate doctorate other than the degree of Doctor of Library Science and an MLS (ALA accredited)      ------OR--------
  
  MLS (ALA accredited) and a second Master’s degree
   

• Twelve (12) years of full-time experience as a librarian, at least six (6) of which must have been at an academic or research library; and
  
• Five years in rank
